we are going to try to paint my hornet :-\ it will probably take a while because we dont know what the fork we are doing but hey why not try ;D
had to tear it down first

Flip it over, paint the bottom single stage and speedcoat the "wet" part. Then turn it over and do any graphics in basecoat and clearcoat over them. Go to a paint supply house and get a "system", all primers, basecoats and clear all same brand and compatible. Take your time, one step atta time.

yup gunna learn how to set an intake :o tommy be ready for a lot of dumb ass ????'s because the poxy is starting to crack. i know i have a lot of hook that i will fix, my only real concern is right in front of the intake. it's all f-ed up
by the way we did not have any stock plug wires, all are for an msd

Did you have a pump brace? If not sounds like your dad needs to fab one up for you, especially with the conditions these boats run in.

been a little while since we worked on it, so today we had to get it off the trailer.
first we built a dolly >:( Omar we sure could have used your skillz beacause we sure aint to carpenters :banghead: this was our first try but figured that the boat would push the rails apart and we had no way to brace it :banghead: :banghead: once again we dont know what the hell we are doing :-[

lifted the boat off the trailer and inched the trailer out, we put the dolly right behind it just in case it fell.

all in all it was pretty easy and only took about 15 min, but now it will be easier to get inside and replace the wood.

i was thinking that because i can lift the transom but it would take a gorilla to lift the bow. then i started thinking that the transom shouldn't be hanging off the dolly ??? i will move it up as you say ;)

i got sticker removal shit too, its called a D-A sander with 80 grit in your hand ;)

Nice job BTW.
I made an attatchment to put on my engine stand, works really well, now I have a taller stand, you can put the bow eye through it and viola, one person can flip the boat in about ten minutes, I use a 2"X3" spreader bar on the rear transome eyes and I use the cherry picker to lift the rear.

GT you need to post some photos of your contraption. We all need this kind of advice when it comes to moving hulls around. Can't always get good help if any.

That is exactly how mine sat for months. 2 rails are fine i think .. I pushed it all over the patio that way, now my dolly is my work bench with wheels ;D

So i will feather the groove out about an inch above and below the groove and see if that helps. I know why these guys get the big $$ to cap a boat now. we will get it eventually :-\

Hey Ralph, impressive progress for such a short period of time.
As far as the capping is concerned, go grab youself a jar of Cab-O-Sil, it's basically ground up fiberglass and it's used to thicken the resin without weakening it, it will also work on the cracks that you talk about, use a resperator though it's nasty chit.
On those spider cracks, use a die grinder to trace out the hairlines and eliminate all traces that way, sometimes you will go all the way through which sucks but the fix is to use the blue masking tape on the underside of the cracks to keep the resin from flowing through, use the resin and Cab-O-Sil first, let it kick, rough it up, unless you're using laminating resin and then go back over it with light matt, cloth is OK but sometimes too uniform to work with.. Looks good so far, sometimes the hardest part is not getting frustrated.

Ralph, just another idea. When we capped my old boat many years ago we used something called micro spheres (I believe) as a filler. It was tiny little balls of glass and when mixed with the resin it was the consistency of bondo. It is very strong stuff !! After something like 5yrs I only have one crack (from an incident with an out of control dock). It might work good for straightening the bottom too.

Looks great Ralph. Having just gone thru this, if there's anything I can do to lend some advice, please let me know. I don't know what I'm doing but it turned out okay and you and your pops are such craftsmen, I'm certain it's gonna be badass.
For the record, I went single stage on the bottom and base/clear on the sides and top like what HD mentioned and am really happy. I also agree with what GT and Proppy said about mixing in some additives in the resin. I used Collidial Silica for the bulk of the high strength glassing/fillin and then went with the microballons to finsh the shaping.

i guess its time to get this off of page 3, as many of you know i bought a house last year so the boat had to sit and wait. I got a new air compressor last week

and that was one of our major hurdles. ya just cant do fiberglass work with a 25 gallon compressor.
after much thought and conversations with my wife about the color we have decided to paint it the same color as it was just to preserve what it was. I dont know if i will ever race it again (dave bryant thing really focking me up) but none the less i cant take its former glory from it. so i will put it back together in race form and we will have to see.
i will take pics and ask ???'s as i go.

From my texts today, from my bud, they're still unsure what failed. "Mechanical failure of some sort" is all the family knows. Curt came to work this morning looking like shit, his wife and daughter at Dave's house I guess. I sent him home after an hour. Wish I had met the guy!
I can certainly understand the fear Ralph, but that should NOT stop you from doing what you love to do. From what I understand, Dave woulda said the same thing..........

Here is a two dollar tip.....When glassing sections of repair, use some masking tape (the water resistant blue stuff) and mask off an area so you can cut down on clean up time, not too close to the work area, just enough to keep the running West Systems from running away from you...Keeps the progress pics coming, it makes me more motivated to keep trying to get my junk done.... :thumbup:

i feel that i made the groove for the cap too deep :banghead: so i layed 4 layers of cloth and when its done kicking i will use west systems 403 microfibers to fill the groove then do a final mat/cloth layer. (lesson learned) :banghead: :banghead:

at this point i need to crawl my fas ass under the deck and lay some glass down, well i dont fit :-[ :mad: and damn near got stuck.
so i taped up the out side and mixed up some bondo glass and shove it up from the lower hole with my hand, and now i have a template to lay glass over. sure hope it works ??? cause if it dont i will be cutting the hole deck off the boat to access that hole. FOCK i knew i should have taken a chain saw to this thing :'(

Ralph alot of work my 02 is on the nose I would have shoved angle hair glass in the holelet it set up ground out a little and glassed over it with matt then shape it with the DA the cap groove now that you laid cloth fill with angle hair and another layer over that of matt wetting it good then DA shaping with 80 grit goes fast good luck bud sucks to be you right now ,but ive been there :thumbup:

I just spending lunch with my Pops. He is 83 and the conversation was pretty much the same as yesterday and everyday last week. I wouldn't rather be anywhere else really. He doesn't like to spend long periods of time with people, says it tires him out, but just seeing his face and hearing his voice is good enough for me. He is one of the very best people I know.
Our time in this life is so short, but family and friends are what makes it worth doing. Ralph give your Dad a hug and tell him we are all wishing him well and hope to see his handiwork on the water for years to come.

Glad to hear your pops is doing well. My dad also had a kidney removed due to cancer about 10 years ago. Cancer is tough but the people who fight it are even tougher!
