my project has been painted, how can i get it back down to the original gel without making it look like shiz?

I used a gasket scraper .
Got most of it down to the gel and with the amount of paint mine had , I've been using 60 grit  :thumbup:

Don't use 60 Grit or you will tear your shit up, unless you have paint on it a 1/4" thick...... use a DA and start with something like an 100 and make sure you are just taking up paint.

If you put a bunch of deep scratches in the gel you can forget about saving the original gel.....unless you want to buff out scratches for the next year

Sorry , I read it incorrectly .
I was trying to get paint and gel off  ;D

What about taking gel off of gel?

My dad had the boat re-gelled in 1976, the boats a 74 Tahiti.
I was thinking about going retro with the Original silver metal flake and blue.

why do you need to take the gel off? I would just sand and put a new base coat down,that is if your going to use auto paint.

The second gelcoat was done 3 years after the boat was new(different colors/design).

I think it would be cool (and maybe cheaper ???) to be able to restore the original metalflake gel.
I have read about cleaning up gel after removing paint that was sprayed over it.
But, I was wondering what the condition of the original gel(because of having another coat of gel put on) would be like if I were to take off the the gel coat that was put down over the original.

i am about to get my boat painted with auto paint by a body shop-im scared its all going to go to hell in the water-can anyone tell me if they have done this instead of gelcoat and has it lasted.has it flaked off.did it look good.someone please help

It does last and looks fine.

John did this one at his house with automotive paint and it turned out awesome.
