Title: How much paint will I need?
Post by: Hawaiian22 on May 10, 2016, 05:00:12 PM
Hi All,

I've been toying with the idea of painting my boat -the paint is in horrible condition- and I'm wondering how much I might need.

My boat is a 22ft Hawaiian mini daycruiser. I'm pretty set on using Pettit primer and EasyPoxy or their gloss white bottom paint. I'm just not too sure how far a quart will take me.

I'll be spraying both primer and paint, and will be painting the entire hull. The current color scheme is wood with yellow and silver metallic. The wood is decent in most places, but the silver portion of the paint is beyond repair and was masked horribly when it was applied. The yellow is thinning in areas and scratched and chipped quite badly in many places. I have tons of prep work to do!!

Anyway, if anyone can give me a good approximation of how much primer and paint I may need, it would be a big help!

Thanks,
-Kory

It took me almost a gallon to do my 19' Wriedt. I put 2 coats on the bottom and 3 coats on the top

Man, the last thing you want to happen is to run out of paint or gelcoat in the middle of your build. And you'll always have extra if you buy too much. What happens if you've got a couple of runs, or the deck's just not right. Buy too much and you'll probably need more.LOL. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for your reply.. did you use a bottom paint for the below waterline portion, or top-side paint for everything?

Thanks

I used a single stage automotive paint that I got from tcp global. It came out pretty nice.

Ahhh... does that hold up well beneath the waterline? Do you leave your boat in the water more than a few days at a time?

Thanks

I've scuffed a little off from beaching. But other than that it holds up well considering I don't leave it in the water overnight.
