Sam fellas the officer checking my HIN # saw it but still wants me to try and remove paint so you can see it clearly. How do i accomplish this. I thatught to tape off with tape and plastic n try solvent like acetone but i really dont know. Some help guys..

If it's riveted in drill it out go to a trophy shop and have them make an exact replica. Pop some new rivets in and off you go to the pigs to get hassled some more...good luck.

If you can read it thru the paint/gel why don't you just use a pinstripe brush and go over the hin numbers with a color that goes with your boat and put some clear over it so it stays. JMO

I am being inspected by the a police Captain n he wants it to be visable like original. Right now you have to find the perfect light and angle to be able to see the HIN and the Cap said if i get stopped and the boats are bouncing the next officer should be able to read easy. Also said if i lift the paint n it can not be read he will let me get a trophy plate.

If the paint/gel build up is that bad theres not much u can do to just wipe it off and make it easy to read. Only thing I can think of if they don't mind u messing with it is to engrave it out the way they do it originally or like the other guy said, to get a new little hin plate made . Post a pic up and let me see it, I might get another idea once I can see how bad it is.. But I would just use one of those lil hand engravers, I have one if u wanna use it. Couple mins and a steady hand and ur set. Then you can apply a lil paint if needed to make her pretty again.

Ya that's weird hes messing with you. I can barely even read the Hin numbers on my scorpion even if I use a microscope lol. Usually they don't want u to even touch/alter/tamper with the hin .

I had to explain to one asshole that my boats a 70' and it doesn't have a HIN, so now I just pull out the reg, and a printed page from uscg stating that because of the year it doesn't have a HIN

I never had had a hin number on my boat or even seen one and it's a bahner and was made in 82 and I was able to get it registered and no one even looked at I did mine at AAA

I just went and looked for mine nowhere to be found and mine is a 78'STWD. Fish and game never asked to see the boat luckily.

Ill get pictures up tomorrow. If the boat reg is done in same state they dont look for HIN since this is a cali boat n title they want to see Hin #. This guy is a by the book guy which is cool but if i fail to lift paint to see #s he will work with me on a plate trophy deal. Which sucks cuz its pretty much destroy your paint n ill help you or dont try what i ask and be screwed.

Somehow, my boat trailer got registered as SE (specialty equipment) and the DMV needs to verify the VIN which just got covered in new powder coat. After speaking to a CHP officer regarding this, I was told that, now that tracability has been lost with my trailer, I need to 1.) destroy my trailer, 2.) show proof that my trailer has been destroyed, 3.) purchase a new trailer 4.) document proof that I did in fact purchase a new trailer, and 5.) register a new trailer.

I love working with the DMV.

If you need / want to try to remove the paint, this is what I would try:

Mask off around the HIN with minimum two layers of duct tape so your finish is not affected.
Cover the rest of the cockpit so you don’t get FOD inside your hull or engine.
Use this 20oz. Hopper Gravity Feed Spot Blaster Gun http://www.harborfreight.com/21-oz-hopper-gravity-feed-spot-blaster-gun-95793.html filled with baking soda for media

I don’t believe that baking soda will remove gel coat, but it will remove paint and it might clean up your HIN enough to satisfy the LEOs. The baking soda, unlike sand or other media, is water soluble so it will clean up easily after.

Can you still feel the hin number if you rub it on the outside? If you can, mask off the area around it and spray some paint over it, then take a squeegee and drag it over it, paint should stay in the grooves and should be easily readable.

I had the same problem. Vin was paint over dumb beotch at dmv couldn't find it so referred me to cho for an inspection. I said screw that called competitive and they sent me a new trailer tag took it back to aaa and they said no not gunna work, went back the next day and talked to a different lady and she said ya no problem and completed the registration. Its a joke
