And the cause?
The trailer latch bolt snapped off, causing the trailer to no longer be connected to my jeep.

It also snapped off both safety chains, and when it passed me, it was doing 20 MPH and narrowly avoided a schoolyard full of children before ending up in the ditch.

Holes in hull - from anaheim fullerton towing company - Notice the impact site is on the OTHER side! They even admitted they did it to 5 people standing around when we unloaded it, and I have witnesses that saw it happen at the site - Oh yea - and I asked them to stop doing what they were doing before it happened...

100% out of pocket - the towing co in the end claimed they didn't do it. My auto insurance wouldn't cover the "cargo" to the trailer (the boat), and the watercraft insurance didn't cover it because I wasn't driving it and / or it wasn't on the water.

Yea, I posted the accident on HotDrama (er Hotboat), but now that that site seems to have gone away, I figured I'd just repost it here otherwise the new gel coat pics would be out of context.

:D No, that chain is the emergency brake.

2x 3/8ths chain is not strong enough aparently for a 21 foot boat - the new trailer (supposed to be done Wed)  is getting the BIG stuff.

Orange County Boat Repair in Stanton is doing the work, should be done by Wed.

That's what I said. Seriously, if it popped off 20 feet earlier, there were kids playing on a playground RIGHT THERE.  I wouldn't have been able to live with myself. Someone gave me a second chance....

All depends on the trailer and when it actually gets finished. Is your boat the purple and orange one?

Thats a Sanger. Mine is the white and brown boat. It came in after yours, I think it will be sprayed this week. They were sanding it last week. I'm working on my trailer also, might end up picking the boat up with the trailer in primer and temp. lights.

at the least any trailer that I tow must have 2 x 5000lb chains. I understand how little the boat and trailer weigh, but if it comes off the truck you have to take in to account the "forces" that are on the chains when "under its own power".

Like Brad, I'm glad to see this come back and very thankful that somebody was looking out for you and those kids.

Between this story and KonaBuds up here where the tongue broke off his trailer while traveling down I-5 in California, I'm going to look over my trailer really well and mount some big sumbitchin cables or chain.  I'll admit, the chain that's on my trailer is old and crappy........ Not anymore.

Fantastic job bringing it back

My uncles neighbors had a mishap a few years back. Trailer came off the motorhome at 65MPH. Boat came off the trailer, outdrive came off the boat and went through someones windshield. The boat itself slammed the side of someones minivan. The outdrive left two people in the hospital one in ICU for a little over 2 weeks.

BJ, I'm with you.  What really amazed me is how poorly this trailer was made (and it's a nice trailer).  All the seams had been smoothed with bondo and when you ground it out, you see poor penetration, cracks and just poor workmanship.

My son spent a ton of nights welding up Pops trailer to make it safe.  I had huge plans for making it bling but shit, it's not worth it.  I'm just gonna make it safe....

Hey Speedy, glad to see your gettin her back together. I wondered how you ever came out on that deal. Chances are if you would have got them to fix it ,you'd just have to redo it anyway to get it right. RE the whole chain deal I've always cris crossed the 2 chains under my tounge to hopefully "cradle" it so it can't fall to the pavement in case there ever is an mishap.

Yea, me too. Snapped them like a 30 year old twig.

So far 100% out of pocket.

On another note, the engine is coming along. Here is a pic mocked up with the TR - I have a single plane with an 850 dp on it too that i will also be trying out.

Yep. BIG is in. I made him put the beefiest ones he had, they are for the large large large fishing boats....

THANKS! Can't wait to get the engine in. I'm half tempted to start tonight, though I know that isn't a good idea.

On one of the other thread, they were talking about discoing the jet before - not to run it dry.

Now, if I unbolt the driveline, I don't know how the thing won't destroy itself on the flywheel - nothing to keep it off (the u joints will just bend it down). And I need to run the engine 'cause I just put it together..

Not sure what you are trying to say here. If you have 4-point mounts and you remove the driveline from the engine and pump, you should have no problem. If by chance you have a direct mount driveline(no PTO) you will have to install proper flywheel bolts.

I'm guessing your talking about disconnecting the driveline from the flywheel, starting the engine, and worried about the driveline "falling" onto the flywheel??

You're a real smart dude so I'm guessing your driveline doesn't dissassemble easily, like with u-bolts.

I would use zip ties (linked together to make a real long zip tie) to hold the driveline up and away from the flywheel.  ;)  Hopefully I'm not completely mis-understanding you.  :screwy:
Title: Re: It's coming along...
Post by: speedymopars on March 02, 2008, 06:12:45 AM
HR56 - Yep, that's exactly what I'm talking about. I pull the 4 bolts from the PTO/Flywheel side, pull it back a little bit, and the U joints are gonna let it flop over and hit either the PTO or flywheel. There really isn't and room to get in there an strap it up, so I'm gonna have to get inventive. I have to actually make the engine mounts today - we'll see where that gets me and what I can do...

I have a lot of polishing to do next winter, for now, it will have to do. Aluminum plate for MSD very rough fitted and sanded just enough to get the burs off.

Bought a NEW MSD blaster 2 coil - what a bummer. In addition to the big made in china sticker, the paint was already flaking off. Feels like they painted over misted oil...

Thanks to the falling US dollar, I am hoping we start having things made in america again.

Suggestion install push button start button use before you use boat , use when boat is pulled and after you tie down helps to get water out of logs, again at home before you put it away, then once a week to make sure no rust or lock up at home, keeps oil pumped up with out start up. I turn my motor over several times be for I leave home, Wont hurt pump if you don't start it ,Boats set for long time oil drawn of hell you know ,( Separate from ING.) LQQKing GQQD ( I love my push botton starter) Saves me money. AND I dont have a pump. ::)

I know you have a Ford solenoid on your boat and it is easy at dash run hot wire from wire block, I hope you have a wire block run hot wire to starter button, separate from ING you don't want power on no keys in ING run wire for starter solenoid to starter button not to ING now you can turn motor over and not start it, You test too see if motor will turn over . The main thing
is you can bump starter to relive spring set on motor if it set for a while. I mark drive shaft
and turn motor to different stop on shaft . If you have a point Dis you bump  it to ADJ points, And no real
dry starts if you turn motor over be for you start , Don't for get that Ford solenoid is wired like is supposed  to be battery one side the starter cable the other side and starter wire to center post on solenoid that is correct way to wire the Ford solenoid separation of power no power
at starter tell solenoid is engaged. And with wire block at dash you play your stereo and
not have to leave keys in ING. or have it on. will post some picturs later

429 - I have a MOPAR so it's a lot cheaper and easier than that! I spent 9 bucks on a moroso pushbutton switch, and wired it in today using a single 14 gauge wire .

I almost had it ready for tomorrow's show at Irvine, but it was not to be. It will probably be done next week.  Did lots of wiring, drilled and tapped the transom adapter for the hyd lines, set up the MSD harness, mounted the starter relay... the lights are mostly in, and the interior is modified. I actually have power to the interior / dash / external lights now.

The straight through water injectors are removed, the new to me nickson snails I cut off to make big all the way through, and the 4 inch tips are ready to be installed in the transom ....

Wouldnt it be cheaper and just as easy to pull your coil wire instead of messing around with puttin in a button?  Just a thought.
Title: Re: It's coming along...
Post by: speedymopars on April 18, 2008, 08:20:22 PM
Actually with the button, I have it mounted to the same al panel that holds the MSD 6 and coil. Easily accessable when I'm working on the engine.

The button ONLY controls the starter, so if I turn the key on, I can start it.

If I leave the ignition off, it will crank until I release the button without fear of starting.

The ignition switch works normally, so when I'm in the drivers seat, the button is ignored.

Otherwise if I need to bump the engine over (like when I set timing, adjust valves, etc)  I have to crawl out of the engine compartment, over the rear seat, and turn the key.

I have starter button on dash, I can turn motor over before i start it. In water dont have to walk to back of boat have remote at motor to . to me it is easier to walk up to boat and push starter button , Dont have to worry a bout taken coil wire out, and putting back, Now I am and old timer and I think in the old days you had to have resistance on coil wire or it
would kill power box, Plus i start in gear bush button and go , I can stand by side of boat
and push button dont have to get in boat. I can turn motor over pump water out of ex&Int or start it while on ramp No pump can run dry. My starter button cost $3,00 Pep Boys and
2'' feet more wire. My motor stays dry no rust on cylinder Walls. No water in logs,Run them
hard put a way dry. :banghead: ::)

IT'S RUNNING! All I have to do is drill two holes to mount the MSD 6AL box (which is bigger than a 6A, I always thought they used the same one), put my rear seat back in, grab various boat stuff and go get it wet.

I'd love to do it before this weekend - anyone else want to go to elsinore during the week? I'm flexible.

I wish I could try out my single plane with my 850 DP, but unfortunately, due to my bad distributor and a bad floatbowl, the carb cought on fire during a backfire. It was bad enough to where I couldn't get it out and had to hit it with a fire extingusher before it spread to the hull.  :'(

Oh well, no damage to the boat, and I know the TR will work better anyway.
