I wanna make my steps look good again. I used the teak oil they guy gave me when I bought the boat, looks great when oiled but quickly fades when I pull it out the water...

I hear people say oil it, don't oil it, seal it, don't seal it... Idk wtf.

I like how the Starbright oil looks but I don't want it tracked all over the new engine hatch.. I know a lot of yas don't have swimsteps, any opinion?

Pick up some TeKa teak cleaner  http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=9118  , it's a two part deal and follow the instructions to the letter....

Let it dry very thoroughly then lightly sand the rough areas with some 240 grit paper and blow the dust off (I use an air compressor, but you could use anything, like a leaf blower). Once this is done and you don't bleed to death when you rub your hands over them, wipe them down completely with some Scotch Brite pads....Blow them off again and hit them with Amazon's teak oil    http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=163  Get a good wet coat going and wipe it as dry as you can after about 10 minutes, let them sit for an hour or two then hit them again with a lighter coat and wipe them down again using a clean dry terry cloth, if you really want to get all high tech, use a heat gun to get them warm between coats or leave them in direct sunlight for a few hours...

This is by far and away the best method out there for doing teak wood. The Amazon's will soak in a give the wood a satin like glow....I have done 1930's and 1940's cruiser dechs this way and you will not track oil anywhere...

Starbrite blows.....It is sticky and nasty and yes, tracks everywhere.....

i went with spar varnish.....i know GT dont like it .....but it was what worked 4 me at the time

I priced out Man-o-war spar varnish a while back, spendy stuff..

Isn't it slippery when wet though? Teak is one of the only woods that survives being out in the open, unsealed.. how's the varnish hold up?

well on mine ....i had the same issue evry 2 or 3 times they would fade...so i teak oil'd them and did the spar thing (getto) but they lasted 2 seasons ........and yes they are a little slick....but did them agin the same way because .....I LIKE IT
