A buddy of mine just took his boat to maaco and had them paint it red for him. the boat was white before but the gel was pretty bad in some spots and he tried wax/buffing but it didnt work so he went to maaco. It turned out pretty clean. Anyone had any experiences with maaco paint? does it last? :sly:

I was always told that if you do your own prepping then it turns out good but if you have them do it, it doesnt turn out so good. I guess they dont prep to swell. Thats what I have been told anyway.

I would chat up the lead painter a bit. All of these guys do work on the side. You can then buy better materials and he will do a better job. A good paintjob demands good prep tho. You really might wanna think about doing that yourself, cuz even the pros don't like to do it much.

Exactly, Prep is 99% of the job. Spraying it is easy, but you can fug it up quick if you don't know what you're doing. Usually a 12 pack will get a good sprayer to do it, lol, if everything is prepped and masked.

Its all in the prep work-- Uncle restores classic Chev's as his sideline business. Built his own booth in his back yard shed. Helped him with prep work millions of times. Spraying paint is pretty easy. Good prep work I can do wonders with spray paint cans. Also worked in the car biz--independent shop doing sales and repairs, mostly Mercedes, BMW's, Jaguars, Porsche and even a few Rolls Royce's and Ferrari's. ;D
Environmental lobby makes it harder to do this. But we fully restored a customers 78' Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II, stripped to bare metal and painted in basically a shed. Came in second in its class at a Rolls Royce Owners Club national show--their main event of the year. Second place cause we painted the windshield washer fluid reservoir the wrong color from the factory.
Employee's from mechanics to paint sprayers, etcetera. Most will do side jobs for extra cash, had my Uncle spray that Rolls Royce during his vacation.
I like original old school even as long as its popping like its new--includes interior vinyl. Before respraying at Maaco (would look good with proper prep). Id rather try wet sanding and some other slightly less work methods before going the prep for respray even at MAACO route.

The common orbital polishers geared for the average consumer one speed, well they suck. Example:

Wet sand.. then get 3M Finesse-It II Finishing Material (polishing compound) , its for fiberglass. Than I like Mothers waxes to finish things off.
