I need help with my clear coat. It was neglected for to long and now the clear it chiping off the gell coat. Not sure on best way to fix it. And no this is not the only spot there is quite a few places this is happening.

It looks like its turned milky too. If you put water on it does it come back clear?

Then you might get by color sanding and being very careful, feather back the bad edges and then shoot a couple of coats of SPI Universal Clear or there a new stuff I just heard about called EZ CleanClear. Suppose to be the best yet! SPI at http://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/Product%20lines.htm EZ CleanClear at http://www.motostorm.com/gpage8.html Color sand with something like 1500 wet/dry.

You might get by with just color sanding with the 1500 or 2000 and then buffing, but that won't sure the chipping back problem.

what year is this boat?
I had a long talk with Sal Jr over at OC Boat repair about this issue. We are currently fighting it with the Wriedt.
The issue is that back in the early years, most of the companys that did metalflake boats used a metalflake that had some sort of wax coating on it that corroded the gel over time. from what i was told is they have done some extensive lab testing with the stuff and found that they use some sort of sealer then gel over it with new stuff.
i've been researching gelcoat for awhile now and i still feel like i have no idea wtf im talking about 1/2 the time.

Hey Brad, You might want to take a look at that EZ CleanClear. I may use it on my boat when I get around to doing the hull rework.

The boat in question is a 1973. I guess I'll try sanding and buffing in a less noticeable spot. If that doesn't work like I want I'll just go the reclear route.
