The gauge holes on the liberty are 2 5/8" and all my mooneyes gauges are 2 1/16. The simple thing would be to get the right size gauges....but mooneyes doesn't sell 2 5/8 gauges. :banghead:
So I need to make the holes smaller. The plan is to fill in the existing holes and drill new ones. I obviously need to do this before paint.
Since I have removed all the wood behind the dash because it was rotted, this should be easier.
The plan is to glass a piece of cloth on the backside and while its still wet, clamp on the new piece of wood that will be the backside of the dash. Once it drys, glass in the edges and around the steering column and dash supports. (which were cut away from the dash to make ease of a rack install :screwy: )
Now the question is....I will need to fill in the void where the old gauge holes were between the wood and surface of the dash.
Anyone have any ideas what to use? I figure resin, but it would just sag out or drip before it cures. same with poxy putty....the weight of it (because its so much) would just cause it to sag.

Can you cut the new wood to fit and then just use bezels to cover it up ???

Get a nice piece of aluminum and make a dash cover. And then mount the gauges in the aluminum.
Or just glass a piece of wood in the holes and not fill them completly with cloth and resin.

I AGREE WITH MARC IF YOU HAVE A HOLE SAW CUT OUT PLUGS THE SAME SIZE AS THE HOLES IN THERE NOW AND GLASS THEM IN WHEN YOU PUT THE WOOD BACKING IN WITH A COUPLE C CLAPS TO KEEP EVERYTHING TIGHT. THEN CUT OUT THE NEW HOLES

I got some thin layers of plywood I can use as filler. I am swinging by harbor freight today to pick up a cheapy holesaw kit. I will post up pics on how it came out.

If you are gonna use C clamps then i would assume you will be using strips of wood or something to put on the front/backside to hold it in place...I would put in some wax paper in between so it dont stick to you'r pressed on wood or whatever you are using.. this way when you go to take it off nothing sticks ;D
Just a thought........ive used this method before :banghead: i love these things...

If i were you I would use 2 layers of mat insted of cloth to laminate the new piece in, saturate it with resing using extra peices of wood to sandwich and distribute the clamping force. If you really want to make it strong, when thats all set up, bevel the edges of the holes out about 1/2" and start layering round pieces of matt in to build back up to the surface progressivley geting larger till almost flush, smooth it out and finnish it off with cloth in some Bondo Jelly. Thats how i got rid of my transome holes.

Since this issue seems to be resolved... How's the job market looking up that ways Josh? I'm looking to possibly move within a 15 minute drive of Nacimiento.
