Alright time for me to address a famous issue on the tahiti...what is going on is the rub rail in a certain spot keeps popping off and pulling the rivets out...it really is an eye sore and at times a pain in the ass! my solution to the problem was new rivets and back them on the inside of the hull with rivets...well brad had an idea to fill the gaps and plug the holes with glass and redrill...personally i like this idea, but i have no clue to go about it...i want it to look clean...and now i am asking the peanut gallery

Ok 1 of the nuts  to give ya an opinion ;)  Kinda looks like you got a bit of a separation between the cap and bottom. Would it be possible to maybe C-clamp in 2 spots on the outside, to squeeze it together and then patch glass it on the inside ??? 86 all those frickin rivets, and drill yourself 2 new holes ???  Looks to me that the split has been there awhile with all those rivets, and they aint holding squat. Just my .02 Nordie 8)

all them rivets were included with the boat...i figured seperation was there tooo but it isnt the end of the world

It wasn't me, I got the boat that way, pissed me off when I finally looked at it to see why it wouldn't stay snug. I was actually thinking some epoxy and be done with it, then again I'm a fat lazy bastard...

Josh, take some packaging tape and pull the hull back together. Put a couple of layers of mat on the inside, get rid of the rivots and thru bolt the rub rail at the ends.

yeah i been running it like this since i got it and it has always drove me nuts! time to address the issue before it becomes an issue

skip you were completely honest with me on everything thing with this boat...im pretty sure it wasnt you that mickey moused 80 million rivets on top of each other...just i know if i keep going it aint going to get any better!

ron this is probably the exact route i go...with detailed pictures for reference for others...i cant be the only clown that has some kind of an issue like this...although i think i am going to half to do a form of a c clamp instead of packing tape i went out there and tried to hand squeeze the bottom and top and no budge...so this is my plan...do what you said just with clamps...then mix up some decent resin with a little less hardner (more working time) and crawl my fat ass under the bow...im going to take the fiberglass matt...the glass that has shit just crossing everywhere...and im going to tear it into little pieces and apply to the affected area...of course i will have it prepped and sanded to bond to said existing glass...i will allow 24 hours of cure time and reapply rub rail...i cant picture in my head through bolting the rub rail...not saying your wrong at all....in fact im sure you right because where the 2 ends meet is where the rub rail is pulling away...i'd imagine someone put a good lick on the boat there at sometime to seperate bottom and top...

another question is does anyone think i should use something a tad stronger for doing this or will normal resin and glass do the trick? i know they have the angel hair stuff and barglass n all that....im not all that familiar with glass work so i guess not question is a dumb question

Josh, dont tear the mat up. I would cut it up into 6" and 8" strips and probably 16" long, wet out the area where the glass is going, stick the mat in there, wet that out and repeat with the second layer before your resin goes off.

Will do ron...so put a 6" strip down first and then 8" strip second before the resin kicks...next dumb question...on the through bolting deal do I use like a button head or some kind of flush head bolt? Or just whatever the rub rail will go over eh?

I think today I'm going to get under the bow and get it all nice n clean in there and maybe do this on a Saturday morning...

Also on something like this is normal household resin going to do the trick of should I make a trip to the body shop?

I'm sure more dumb question are coming!

you will need to sand/grind down the inside of where you are going to glass.  If it has any dirt , grime, oil ect... You are waisting your time, get it clean .

I use a 4" disc and Acetone to wipe down and clean with...




(edit)  If you want to clamp it down, use a ratchet strap and a block of wood and put a wet towel under the wood. This does work ;)

joshy i have some 2 part epoxy that mixes in the tip that works wonders on everything..........squirt it in there clamp it down let it set up and reinstall the rub rail....all done!!

Steve, would that not invite it to come back again later? I mean, it'll be in a bind and every bump is gonna try and loose itself.

Fill it as is, I would think, we're not talking an 80+ MPH boat here.

Your hull, Nordie, is like a seasoned engine block. The core shifting, everything has taken place. Now just fix it as it lie and see what happens, gonna be fine, I am convinced.

X2  why make one part stronger then the rest ? it will fail in the end with all the flex we have in our rides.. Unless you want to cap it..

Yeah im pretty sure i got a game plan already...i am going to clamp the hull back together...i understand the logic behind not clamping it together, but im going to go with my logic...and its simply saying that it peeling apart there and its going to keep peeling away from the bottom as this coninues...right now its a 4-6 in affected area...in a year it could goto 12...the rivets that are a few inches away on each side are breaking as well...
