I know most smart people wet sand and polish before upholstery buuut not me so now that the interior is done i got started buffing out the boat. Started with 1000 and then 2000 grit and went after it with some 3m finess it! this stuff works awsome its a finishing material, or polishing creme anyway here are some pics

Really Boss! F$kn A as we say in the 70's. What make/model sander did you use? Finesse it? (is there onegrade or is that it?) what kind of Wax? Did you use a mechanical buffer on the wax?

I tried a high speed buffer and some rubbing compound and got no where last night , I think you need to come over and give me some tips!

how deep do you go with the 1000 grit?

i would go with 1500/2000 depends what the paint /gelcoat looks like need to wet sand all the orange peel out then start w/rubbing compound 3m perfect -it II 05973 this is for 1200 or finer grit then i use perfect - it II 05995 foam polishing when i polish i sprinkel a litte water on it then polish Use slow rpm grinder and i use wool on the compound just make sure you keep the pad clean w/ screwdriver lots of work but it pays / becareful not to get the paint to hot to burn the paint

Ok heres the low down
1. started with a bucket of water washed the boat well with some meguires car wash
2. fresh pail of water with a little dawn liquid soap and started wet sanding with 1000 grit for first cut, as your rubbing boat water gets milky but you can feel the paper working at first it is a little sticky and ruff but as you work paper you can feel the finish smooth out. I continued the same way with the rest of the boat.
3. fresh pail of water some more dawn and performed same steps with 2000 grit. paper feels the same i kept working till i got same smooth consistency over the whole boat.
4. washed the boat completely down with meguires car wash again.
5. spent some money here, went to harbor frieght and bought a variable speed buffer actually a really good deal 37 bucks and it comes as a kit with some wool pads and terry cloth pads I ended up spending about 75 bucks cause i purchased some extra wool pads and a pack of terry clth towels.
Ok next step and I think it was the best I used a finishing compound made by 3M called "finesse it" its designed as a fine rubbing compound for removing swirls in high end paints it definetly did the trick on the boat you can get it at most detail supply houses.
Started out with a wool pad at lower speeds to apply and would slowly increase speed to buff out it worked terrific.
6. After completely buffing boat washed again with meguires car wash and dried.
7. last but not least I used a cleaner wax from west marine i was gonna use meguires but i heard that there house brand works really well so i gave it a try im happy with the outcome used the buffer in the same fashion as the finish compound for application only i buffed by hand with terry cloth towels and thats about it hope this helps

How many hours would you say you have in it?

not that bad really 2 weekends off and on maybe about 12 hours i guess it wasnt that bad really i would hate to have to do it on a larger boat i could see it taking alot longer

I don't have that kind of dedication! Especially now it's getting warmer and warmer!

i dare you to get started in a small portion of the hull when you see it bling out you will find the dedication its not that bad

looks awesome juat sprayed the last 3 coats of clear and now will start color sand and buff my project yours is inspiring :thumbup:

that thing is gorgous!!! im going to be doing that soon. ill post pics of my progress...thanks for posting the steps you did it in and the stuff you used...thats going to help alot.

the "3e finnesse" works wounders.. better than the magiuars diamond cut and gel wax that i had used last month.
