Stinger patch up
« on: September 09, 2015, 04:25:54 PM »
Ok so a buddy if mine just picked up a open bow commander boat. A short section of the stringer is rotten from the motor mounts holes. My question is it ok to replace a small section of the stringer as Long as the 2 pieces are spliced together well. Thus is not a high horse power boat stock bbc with a berkley E pump. Thanks for the input

Just my 2cents, take boat to couple good shops. See how they would repair it and how much. Dont lie tell um youll consider it, 2nd opinion and all. If you fell confident with new info, fix it yourself. Good luck, see you out there!:)

Is it a 1/4 stringer boat?

Scarf joints are ok. If done well enough.
The
Usually....rot doesn't remain in a localized area. Be prepared for the can of worms.  :-\
I recently replaced both my full stringers. Not hard...but a bit of work.
Good luck.

Here's the issue I have.

To just scab a piece of new material in a rotted section is asking for issues down the road.

To do this repair,  the engine needs come out,  the bad wood removed, new wood fitted, pinned, fiberglass,  grinding, painting,  reinstall the engine, drill new holes Yada Yada blah blah blah.

The work description is identical to replace the whole thing. Just a bit more in materials and prep time.

Why just wash the ass of the underwear when it takes very little to complete the job?..

I think....you mean the floor.
Floor has to be romoved to access stringers.
It's a job for sure....especially for just 1 or part of one stringer.

That boat is very similar to my Carrera 20.5 Elite.

The stringer is likely cut down at the floor level. I would at least consider replacing from the bilge beginning all the way to the transom.

You can always "sister" a splice piece to the outside of the stringer as the cut. Willing to bet there is more rot though. You can use a small ball peen hammer to thump around in the hull. Good wood/glass should sound like you're whacking the crap out of concrete. Not we cardboard.
