What is : "non-alkali" fiberglass?
« on: July 15, 2014, 09:37:35 PM »
Came across some rolls of 'glass that are described as NON-ALKALI, plain weave 6.48oz. And colored white.
What does the non-alkali properties mean in lay-mans terms? Can I use this along with my 'glass tape to repair the floor, install the stringers and keel, and 'glass up all the seats? Or is it not suitable for the type of application? After searching google I only came up with that some times it is infused with paraffin wax (would that keep the resin from sticking to the fibers?) and it is excellent as a heat insulator.

You will have to use it with epoxy resins only. It is normally used in conjunction with shellac.

Non alkali fiberglass is used almost exclusively in the electric motor industry for winding protection and insulation. The non alkali properties are used because they play nice with the metals prone to corrosion...
