Title: Transom
Post by: dezerttoyota on April 21, 2015, 07:57:35 PM
The transom is rotted on my 21' commander and i need it replaced, so im looking for a good shop to take it to, or if anyone on here wants to do it.  I called up oc boat repair and the quoted me 2200-2300. And martinez marine queted me 1000- 1500. And these quotes are for just the transom work, im pulling out drive and motor out. Does anyone have any other shops or should i just go with martinez. I wish i could just do it myself but i work to much right now to get it done.

I have a couple of questions that may save you some serious grief.

How are the stringers and the floors? It would be very unusual to have concentrated wood rot just in the transom. To do the transom properly, the stringers, portions of the floor and the motor mounts need to be removed and redone.

I have done literally hundreds of these and can say with a 90% certainty that the transom is likely the small problem. Doing this type of work is exactly how I almost lost my left hand (long story).

I highly recommend having some serious exploratory investigation work done. When I do these, all through cut areas like exhaust holes, bilge pump dumps, trim tab holes, get drilled out to a much larger size and Sea Going Epoxy is used to fill and re-drill the holes, this make the wood getting wet an absolute improbability.

In most cases (depending on labor rates and materials used), this was a $2500 plus job.

If someone gives a quote for less than $2K, get it in writing. These things have the tendency to take on a life of their own.

Lifted 250, please do not take that personally, this sounds like an I/O, not a jet, quite complex comparatively speaking. I am in the middle of doing my Carerra Elite and I have 18 hours in it just removing the old wood. I use a time clock to have an idea of what jobs take, I will have well over 60 hours in this one. Figure that out at your local shops labor rate.....   :screwy:

Like I said, don't take it personally. All I am saying is that if this were in my shop, I would spew a number like $2000 before I said $1000...

Be killer if you guys could do it for less. But color me skeptical...  :sly:

Its an i/o.  Its rotted from the drain plug to 10in up. I posted about it about a year ago. I took it to oc boat repair to get the motor mounts and stringers replaced. They quoted me 1200 and it ended up being 2100.  The work looked good, they replaced the quarter stringers and the motor mounts but the first trip i took it out i noticed the bildge filling with water faster than im comfortable with. After searhing for the leak i found a crack on the transom probably 6in long a couple inches above the stringer and i push on it and stick my finger in there and its hollow.

This is why I made the investigation comment on an earlier post. The transom did not rot in a year. It was there when the mounts were replaced.

Do the math. $1,200 quote, $2100 when done, needs more work.

I have seen this more times than I care to mention.

Lifted, what's your labor rate?

Dude,

Don't get defensive, no need my man.

I was simply asking because our labor rate, almost 20 years ago now, was $80 an hour, most shops in my area here are over $130/hr, trying to figure out how you can do it at such a low rate.

The way I figure it, this is a 20 hour job, it's going to require about $160 in materials.

Math again;

20 hours at say $80/hr.

That's $1600

Add the material and you are at $1760.

This job can't be done in 20 hours and I hope you are not charging less than $100/hr.

Just keeping it real. I did it for 18 years.

Just sayin'.

No offense intended.

By the way, just for discussion sake, I can have the engine and drive out of an I/O in about an hour and a half.

Did one last week for a rear main seal. Back in and aligned in just under two hours.

That's awesome.

The only reason I was pushing for more information was because I get people needing work done on a daily basis. May be worth the drive.

I think you get the wrong idea about me sometimes.

Peace out.

Here is my 2 cents about all of this.

lifted250: You claim to be working for Edge Marine in Hesperia (never heard of it - and Google renders nothing) I suggest you carry yourself a bit more professional if you are trying to make a name for your shop, you're already digging a hole for yourself. This thread isn't the first time I've heard something negative with your name associated with it. Your name is now a direct reflection of the shop you work for since you did claim that as a reason to trust your opinion - in this thread.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy what we all are here for - the passion of jet boats. If you're here to be a hard ass, this isn't the place to be that guy. The people here you are arguing with have more reputable experience than you from what I can tell from your posts. I welcome you to prove everyone wrong, but have some facts to back it up, rather than dropping a name of a shop that Google hasn't even heard of.
