Title: Wetsand before or after compound?
Post by: 2savage4you on August 19, 2007, 09:42:37 AM
I uncovered my boat and took a look at it and it looks like crap when i took some pics. Now im thinking about spending the day trying to clean it up. I got some rubbing compound and was gonna try it but should i wetsand it before? To me it looks like the clear coat is coming off kinda hazy and what grit paper?

I was just talking to a painter friend of mine yesterday about color sanding my boat.  My boat is still gelcoat, but he recommended 2000 grit in a circular motion than polish.

I think that if the base color is gel you can get away with clear coating again, but you are gonna need to remove the existing clear first.

Yep, you'll definately have to get rid of the existing clear first.

2Savage....

That is still salvageable if you don't wish to put new clear on it. But it would still look better with new clear.

Try some 600-800grit wet sand on those white chaulky areas first, long as when you're wetsanding the water running off is whiteish, not the base color, you should be fine. You can work your way up through the grits. It's usally best to buff after 2000grit, or even 3000 grit. But with clear like yours if you started wetsanding with that high of a grit it would take you forever.

Or if you wish I'll come over and show yah how it's done ;). I've been wetsanding on my boat off and on for a month now, just too damn hot outside, I also have some sand paper and blocks with me here.
