The attached pics are of my 73 Kona project,motor is smoked but working on that,a friend has left me the boat and beings that I'm a newbie to fiberglass  I was hoping that the peeps on this board might be able to give me some help.Not sure of the terminology but one pic shows where an eye bolt was used in the front of the boat,and I would like to replace or repair with with the correct part and the next pic is a chip that looks like a lot of clear coat has been applied,it appears to be extremely thick so I was hoping someone might be able to identify and tell me if this is the original paint and color.

the eyebolt area def needs to be addressed.  you have exposed wood in an area that gets wet.  that'll go downhill quickly.  unbolt the eyebolt, sand the whole area down, plug the existing holes with dowels, fiberglass it all up and water tight (be sure to do an area on the inside as well)  and then just find some paint that matches and paint it.  then redrill 2 holes for a UBOLT not an eye bolt and use some silicone to make sure its water tight when you bolt up the new stainless ubolt.



fiberglass/resin is easy to do, its not rocket science for patching, etc.  and its not costly.  it just takes time and patience and a lot of elbow grease with sanding and prep. 

 Why do I see wood by that eye bolt ? There should be no wood there.  Maybe your buddy stuck a wooden dowel in the other hole where the U bolt belongs.  Will be interesting to see just what that eye bolt is bolted to, dont see a nut on the outside just a bunch of sillycone.

 How is the rest of the boat, stringers, transom, etc, etc.  Finding a "repair" like that would make me dig carefully through the rest of the boat looking for other issues.

I would agree, but looking VERY closely at the pic, it would seem someone simply screwed an eye bolt into a, what, maybe modified 2x4 as a backing plate?

Whichever, a LOT of work ahead of ya fixing that! I'd start grinding on the INSIDE to see if a wood backer was factory or not, but either way, gonna end up with a 6x6 hole probably and a lot of fiberglass work ahead of ya!

Just my .02, IF it had wood in there to begin with, I'd eliminate that and lay it up a few layers heavier with a 4x4 or so SS plate as backup.....

Hey Proppy my Sanger has a wood reinforcement where my bow eye goes through.. looks factory to me?

 Yea, your right about the wood reinforcement inside the hull my Brendella has that too, but you wouldnt see it sticking out flush with the outside of the hull like that.  Still looks like someone stuck a wooden dowel in the second hole for the original U bolt to me.  Then smeared it with sillycone.

 Climb inside there and lets see what the inside looks like LILDAWG1961. 

Ok I understand using a U-bolt but how do you secure it,somebody mentioned crawling up inside,I haven't looked real hard but is that possible? I'm not a small individual but cant imagine getting up there,besides that theres a fuel tank in the front.

yes you or someone smaller will have to crawl up under the bow and bolt the bow eye in and seal it with marine silicone...
