I just got a new boat and im looking into sanding down the boat and the pump the pump was paint bright pink to match the stripes down the side of the boat.It also has a a gel coat on it.I was wondering if any one ever powder coats them or what i should do with it.Im new to the jet boat seen.and i was also wondering if i should sand blast that first or hand sand it.

thanks for the welcome.Yeah ill have to get some pics of the boat up here.and also while im on the paint topic I have a couple fiber glass repairs to do really small and some paint chipping and alot of gel coat spots chipping.Im looking to start sanding this thing soon and getting it into a paint shop for a really basic kinda budget paint job any good shops in the 951 area im from hemet cali. please let me know. first boat just trying to get it river ready.

Try paint stripper first on the pump. I went the cheap way and sanded the old finish off my pump, best I could, it also had aircraft aluminum oxide primer on there that I didn't ever get completely off, and then went the rattle can epoxy paint route. I'll post some pics in a little while to show you what it looked like before and what it looks like now. Later on, when I get my powder coat oven up and running and next winter, I'll strip everything to bare aluminum and powder coat to match the boat. NOT PINK though. ;D

Yeah i hear ya on the get it ready part ;) Im doing a project myself........
One thing you will soon learn is its a boat, it aint gonna be cheap so if you can flip the bill the first time do it, otherwise it will just cost you more in the long run.
I believe Ralph Brunt said, "cheap aint good.....and good aint cheap" words to live by..

i had mine powder coated and am happy with it, but i did get some of the gassing from the metal. not bad but it is there. obviously my pc'er did not know what he was doing. I am getting ready to give him my diverter to do, hopefully he does better this time

I don't think I would have accepted that job. Just my 2 cents. Your PC'er shouldn't have allowed that work to go out the be seen.

the pics make it look a lot worse than it actually is, buy we will be having a discusion on it when i drop on the diverter. i have learned a few things (thanks to everyone on this site) since it was done.

Looks great. Wanna paint mine? Be carefull with that strap around your pump. I've heard bad things about that. Sorry about the thread jack WAF. and welcome.

if you just want to rattle can it...go to pep boys and pick up a can of duracolor (i think thats what its called) and they made a color called linen white....it is identical to the berk white.....and a can of clear too. it will look like new if done right

I went to Lowes and bought Appliance White. The other whites were just too gray to me, and this had a good gloss with no clear... LET IT DRY a LONG time and this stuff stays soft for a long time. I did mine in the fall and it was getting cool and damp at night.

One of these days I'll have the powder coating set up installed and then I'll do that the way it's suppose to be done. Once again, preparation is 90% of the job!

Ok sounds good thanks for all the help and info on the pump and stuff my buddy does sand blast and powder coat so im gonna see what he can do for me if im not ill be going with a spray paint of some sort to get that finished up. what was wrong with the picture shown above of that sand blast job i didnt catch it?and any ideas on the boat painting stuff?an dprep work.

I would not sand blast aluminum! :o too easy to make peeks and valleys in the aluminum that will oxidize later on and make it
look worse faster, plus you will need to sand to make it smooth again. Best is paint striper if your going to remove the paint...
spray on, scrape off... toxic stuff so delute it if your going to flush it down the drain ::) LOTS!... fish die easy from that stuff
(humans too ;D) anyways... if you sand, remember one thing. Aluminum contains oils in the metal... you need to clean it with
Methyl hydrate before you apply primer. A zink rich primer is best... or an etching primer for aluminum. Then top coat with paint,
I would use a durable paint (urethane), but if you don't have spray equipment, your left to a rattle can :( should still look good.
