Title: 1973 Southwind, 18' Bulkhead question
Post by: Racer3822 on April 06, 2015, 10:14:24 AM
Well I'm new and I just picked up my first jet boat! But she is ruff the big stuff is that the interior is shot and someone cut out the bulk head?? So need pick's of how long it supposed to be the need to reglass the seat boxes but she does run and summer is closing fast! Thinking beer kegs up front and go from there! Oh and did i mention that pack rat's maid it there home?? Lol

I found this old topic.  I have a '73 18' Southwind with 1/4 stringers.  I have redone much of it with new floors and bulk head.  The one I installed mirror the original, where it is not cut at all, just a little 1'x1' door for access to the front.   I have seen many who cut a larger hole in the front bulk head leaving about 6 inches all the way around.  I was going to do this as I need to get up to the front to repair a crack and just leave it like this.   However since the stringers don't go all the way up, does anyone see a problem with this?  All of the ones that I see without a bulkhead have larger stringers running the whole length of the boat.

Any amount you remove will obviously weaken the bulkhead but it is mostly there to provide support to the upper deck area of the boat. I know on my southwind 18' the top deck is very thin and I Installed a full bulkhead and then cut out a Access hole and then screwed a panel over top.

My buddy had a Southwind with same issue.  He cut that hole or square larger so a body could fit through it.  Did not cause an issue.  It is good support for top deck but I still wouldnt let any chicks dance on it.  Whenever we had to say climb on top to get to dront D ring at dock or whatever we kinda stuck to moving around outter edge.
