83 20' Targa, anybody seen one like this?
« on: July 12, 2016, 01:02:05 PM »
Bought this Targa a couple months ago. Haven't been able to find much out there about it other than I heard they only made boats for a couple years. Can't find another model like this on the web. Does anyone know much about it?
Thanks

Targa/mr Ed has a Facebook page. You can get a little history there and connect with other owners. I did some research before almost buying one in Fresno.

Design was Sanger but Sanger sold it too Mr Ed which became Targa (is my understanding). Built in Fresno for a short time (8 years or so).

Call Fresno Marine, I can't remember the gentlemans name (I think he was the owner) sees and works on a lot of Targa boats. Very knowledgable. Everything I've heard are that they are solid hulls.

I think there are boats manufactured under both names. I'm not sure the difference. Good looking boat. How does it run?

It's a unique looking hull. I like how the swim step is part of the boat and not a bolt on. It runs pretty good for its age, has a fairly stock 460 with a Holley 750 mated to a JE Berkely pump w/ place diverter. Had and issue with spinning out at first, but that was due to some smart tabs that were way too stiff to perform for this boat that the previous owner installed. After removing the tabs it goes straight and stable around 55mph, not bad for a 20 foot boat. Can't find anything that looks exactly the same anywhere on the web, lots look similar, but are older spectra mini daycruisers. I don't really consider this hull as deep as the typical mini though.

I'm not too sure about your Targa other than it's a unique, beautiful hull . Congratulations.

To the best of my knowledge,Tarva boats were made in Clovis, California by Manny Lopez and a gentleman whose first name is Vito. Can't remember his last name. They were mostly larger Cruisers, 20 foot and bigger. Real stylized sloping decks. Manny and Vito worked for Mr. Ed Wills who made Mr Ed boats, also in Clovis California. My Mr Ed was made 40 years ago by Manny and Vito. They opened up their own shop many moons ago. I took my boat to them for restoration a few years ago.
I'm sure with a little "digging" you can find out more about your Targa. Good luck!

So much for my research... I was referring to Tarva not targa... I blame the dyslexia. Hope you enjoyed your history lesson on Tarva!

I have no idea about Targa. I completely blew that one. Apologies 😬

The Hawaiian was not a copy, we tooled up that new deck, and the changes to the spectra bottom, in house. One of my favorite Hawaiians.

I mis-read your post. The targa could be a splash but the deck above the dash looks like it was changed a little. Someone else in the OC ended up with those Hawaiian molds (we had LOTS of molds and they went everywhere) and built them for a while, can't remember who it was.
