1973 Spectra 20 Jet
« on: December 31, 2013, 09:23:18 PM »
GUY'S,
The bottom of this hull has never been touched. What are the pro's and con's of it and how can it be improved?
It does have a 12JC and a BBC.
Hook?
Set back the engine and pump?
I am stripping it down and getting ready to turn it over now.
Advise needed....
Thanks, GARY.

Going to give you the straight skinny here...

Having built two of these, owing one of the two, leave it alone, build the pump with a AA Mag bronze with a quality stuffer, install a Place Diverter and a high quality two plated loader set a 3/8" below keel and drive it like you stole it.

A set back wont do anything unless you are making stupid horsepower (in excess of 750) and that hull is built so heavy and tough that it will still be a 65-70 MPH ride...

If it hasn't been done, remove the glass tanks and install some aluminum gunwale tanks and go have some fun...

These are just my opinions of course, but they call them "cruisers" for a reason.

Already did the tanks, It doesn't have a diverter. I have a sport loader and had a AA but could only get 4900 rpm out of it. It does ride very flat on plane (it wont break loose), seems like a lot of drag and, cavitates BAD out of the hole.

Not to offend, but throw the sport grate into the recycle bin and by an SS style

Like so... http://www.berkeleyjet.com/p-13253-ss-super-sport-loader-scoop-for-jc-jg-ji-pumps.aspx

As for the cavitation, look up "Ultimate Wear Ring" and "Bowl Stuffer", that big tub should not need an inducer, with a tight pump and a Mag bronze AA with a nice snug wear ring clearance, you wont be able to get it to cavitate no matter how hard you try.

The Sport grate is hurting you IMHO

What GT said..... x2 ....
And an inducer wouldn't hurt either.
But work on one thing at a time.

Hallett Dave called me the other night and said the same thing "throw the sport loader away and get the stock one back on"...Right now I'm taking the boat down to the glass for a possible re-gel, set up, 4 point mounts, rails and lots of time in my Dad's machine shop. Just don't want to have to touch it again when its done. Hopefully come up with a proven happy medium with each part and HOPE it works when it all comes together.

I have an 18 73 spectra... heavy full interior/stereo and hatch. I have a berk A imp, preloader, 9 vane aggressor/stuffer, place divertor/straight snoot, bolt on ride plate/shoe set at 3 up with a stock rock grate. The plate and shoe was the final best improvement.

The Spectra 18 is a totally different animal. It actually makes sense that a rideplate and shoe helped.

Does your 18 have double stringers? I have seen then both ways.

It has two main that go past bulk then two small outer ones that stop around dash. Had a keel/turn fin that I removed earlier this year... rides better without it since the install of plate/shoe. Was gonna add a loader grate and have the entry ski one but it seems to ride real nice now.
