Title: Cost to replace stringer & floor.. Sleekcraft 19' Rebel. I've already cut out..
Post by: dm2bfree on May 11, 2010, 05:53:25 PM: Hey guys.. So, my floor was feeling spongy and I decided to check it for rot, and well.. I found a lot! I've pulled up the old plywood floor (which was glassed in) and the old single stringer up the middle.. My problem is that I'm not sure that I want to experiment for the first time w/ fiberglassing my boat!? I'm thinking I'd like it done right the 1st time so I never have to worry about it. Anyone know what about what it would cost to do if I brought the boat to a shop as it is? I'm in Lakewood, CA..

Here's what the old string was looking like!? yikes.. I'm surprise the hull hasn't starting stress cracking, figuring its an '81..

Halfway through cutting out the old floor.

I had to cut out the old wall and pull out the foam that was in the nose to get to the end of the stringer..

Post by: dm2bfree on May 14, 2010, 04:58:05 PM: I checked them out and got and estimate, they seem like the do really good work! Unfortunately, I don't have the coin it would take. I've done quite a bit of research and think I can do it.. We'll see how it goes :) One question though is what type of wood I should use for the stringer and type of plywood for the sub floor?

Post by: River Roy on May 14, 2010, 05:18:33 PM: Want to use Kiln dried fir, NO NOT USE PRESSURE TREATED WOOD!!! Epoxies or fiberglass resins don't stick well or long on PT Wood. I found that Busy Beaver's 1/2 Sanded Plywood was the best quality around but I'm in Pa.

I put my stringers/floor in http://www.socaljetboats.com/projects/baja-184-ss/ , Working on installing engine now, Was not difficult. Read and asking questions worked for me, Also search "Stringer repair replacing" on google and u-tube and with this sites info you can do it to.

Post by: perandall on May 30, 2010, 05:26:33 PM: how funny i am half way through doing the same thing on my boat. wife looked overshoulder one night and asked what our boat was online for.ha ha ha...i have all ripped out right now and fabbing up the rear bulkhead i guess and the keel beam and then in we go. i was told to use marine grade plywood for floor.

Post by: GT Jets on May 30, 2010, 09:09:23 PM: B C X is your friend :thumbup: ...exterior rated glue, sanded knot free one side rough opposite side....

Marine ply has the best laminating glue and the knots are "milled and filled" in each actual ply so there are no voids....Not necessarily true with any other grade of plywood...I normally try to plan ahead with penetrations and laminate in some solid epoxy putty for drilling and tapping for accessories and what not...That way your not exposing wood to moisture (#1 killer of glass over wood boats.).

Worked in a plywood mill for a summer.... ;)

Post by: dm2bfree on June 30, 2010, 01:44:20 PM: Yes, there are supports under the hull.. It is sitting on a homemade dolly w/ bunks that run the length of the hull.. I'll leave it on there until I'm ready to glass in new stringers..

( it even had a Rogers cast name plate on the dash) If this is the same boat and dm2bfree just bought it as a Rogers I think you were sold a fraudulent boat. I have never seen a Rogers with a keel stringer and half stringers for the motor. Roger would never let a boat out the door like that. Hope all goes well for you which ever way you do the fix. If what I thought turns out to be true let us know who sold it to you so someone else doesn't get scammed by the same guy.

Hey, thanks for looking out! But, I've had this boat for about 4 years & it's not for sale, so it wasn't me.. It is an old school pain in the a$$ Sleekcraft :D

Post by: renegade on July 24, 2010, 06:28:42 PM: we used spuce wood like they used in the spuce goose. and used sea going putty to set it in. then glassed over the top..
