Title: Gas tanks bolted thru hull??
Post by: Blown R/T on March 26, 2014, 10:04:46 AM
Was working on the boat on Mon and happened to notice the gas tank straps are bolted thru the bottom of the hull, is that normal?!?!

Aside from the possibility that it leaks (haven't had it in the water as of yet) will the bolt heads affect the handling in any way?

Carriage bolts?
How far forward? 5' from transom, or 1' from transom
If they are out of the water at speed, I wouldnt worry about it, as long as they dont leak

All I can see is the bolt head with some silicone looking sealant around it but I imagine they're carriage bolts...  One tank on each side and each tank has 2 straps, one about 1' from the transom and one prob 4'

My hondo had it's tanks bolted in the same way. I found an article a long time ago showing a different way to do it. Might be able to find it again later. I was told  it was standard practice on some manufacturers

only 2 bolts?  you need more bolts!  you dont want your gas tanks to fall out!

Lmao!!  There's 2 bolts per bracket and 2 brackets per tank...  Thankfully it DOESN'T look like that!!

Left the hondo the way it was. I'm doing the new boat similar to how Sam did his scorpion

Here is a link to the article of how to build some brackets.

My Hondo had through bolted brackets originally, and when I replaced the tanks I still went with through bolts.

That just seems like not the best way to do it.  I'd rather fiberglass a bracket in than drill thru the hull.

Thanks for the info guys!!  You all kick ass!  Sam, those look bad ass!  For now I just want to get it running and get it on the water, I'll worry about re-doing it later
