Hull setup and handling???
« on: June 14, 2009, 11:34:33 AM »
This winter I'll be rerigging the whole boat. I have been thinking alot lately about while it's bare, to flip it and strAighten the bottom. Would there be any point to do a setback in my little boat besides getting the hand hole out of the boat? I can do the work, so the cost doesn't matter. Left turns in the boat are sketchy. The boat stands on it's side and digs the bow rail in. Would this be from a hook? Right turns are flat and can take em fast. The lefts I thought were caused by weight distribution, but it always does it. The boat planes out faster than any boat I've seen or driven. So I'd like to get some input from the veterans here.

I have been thinking alot lately about while it's bare, to flip it and strAighten the bottom.

Could be a good move providing there is a problem. Otherwise possibly a wasted effort.

Would there be any point to do a setback in my little boat besides getting the hand hole out of the boat?

The advantages are more than just the handhole cover. It lowers the thrust angle to the hull, moves the engine rearward making the bow lighter (providing you have the transom space), makes the boat react like it is bigger, and accentuates the steering angle (sometimes a bad thing).

I can do the work, so the cost doesn't matter. Left turns in the boat are sketchy. The boat stands on it's side and digs the bow rail in.
Would this be from a hook?

I would bet more on either a soft spot in the bottom, or a misaligned intake to the hull (easy to verify).

Right turns are flat and can take em fast. The lefts I thought were caused by weight distribution, but it always does it. The boat planes out faster than any boat I've seen or driven. So I'd like to get some input from the veterans here.

Measure the pump intake to the strakes from front to rear (mine was off by over an inch) and make sure whatever hook/rocker is on the port, is on the starboard (very important)

I have little/no experience with a boat this little, but my .02c would include; make sure the bottom has an actual problem before playing with it, if it's pretty close, gains would be hard to come by (I am a "bang for the buck" guy), a setback pump could pose a whole new set of issues and on a hull this small may react in an extreme manner, last, plan on three times the cost that you think it will take, suprizes always come up...Oh, and don't forget some pics

that's one thing I didn't even think of, a setback would give more room in the seating areas.
Some good info Glenn, appreciate it

That left turn, right turn thing sounds odd. My flat k-boat would turn better one way than another....but a jet?? I'd probably throw a straight edge on the bottom at least. Personally I wouldn't worry about any hook less than a 1/4" in 5 of 6 ft.

ok so i have a few ideas floating around in my head.
i have a split bowl so maybe a wedge or a small droop?
and i want to get some roost.
i got a little more power now and i want to go faster. the boat i grew up in was a 16' glastron with a 135 horse whacker that would do a solid 63 on gps chinewalking like a mofo, so i have alot of seat time driving over powered small boats. my boat did 58.7 before the gps shut off so im not sure if that was the max speed.
heres a couple pics.

everyone comments on the handling, i just never make lefts  ;D
do you guys think she can get out of the water a lil more?
obviously you can see i need some keel work

SD The Boat looks like its "wet" and I belive it likley has the potential to runs 70 plus , could have some hook could have some other issues , I think a may benefit from a set back (easy to do) Call me if I can help you Tom

Hey Kev-
Just an idea- but lift the back of the boat off the trailer and straight edge the bottom of it- I would try a diverter and a droop of some sort before going on rictor on the bottom and emabarking on set back- if you freshen the pump and give it some trim- it might come alive- I'll let you know how the bottom tuning and setback deal works out if my deal ever sees water again :banghead:

That's the plan for now, while the season is here. Just finding ones that I can afford is another issue. Keeping my eyes peeled for that super cheap deal! I've got plenty of patience. I have other issues with the boat right now like needing to pull the motor and changing the flywheel.
