stringer height question

so im in the process of prepping boat for stringers. floor, motor bulkhead, motor....have been removed. currently its a 1/4 stringer float. im looking to go full stringer. however, my current stringers are approx. 2x6s. which come up above the original floor level. so if i ran those stringers they would end up above the floor....and if i move floor up to the stringer height....there would be a gap where the floor meets the hull on the sides.
to go full stringers...id leave the 2x6 at full height until it met the floor and rip it down to approx 3 inches or what ever it need be... and run those forward to bulkhead. boat is a 81, 21 foot tahiti day cruiser.
will 2x3 be enough for stringers forward from the engine?
originally there were 3 floor supports. going full stringers means removing those, replacing them with stringers and cross braces between the stringers. im stuck at the moment....a 3inch tall stringer seems small....yeah it will work....but can i expect longevity or stress cracks from such a small stringer in a 21 foot boat?? suggestions???

Make them 2x6 from transom to bulkhead. Make a floor that sets between the stringers all the way down to the fiberglass of the hull this floor can be made removable if you prefer. You could even raise the floor a couple if inches if you wanted, just more work.

You can cut them down, many manufactures do it that way, I just prefer the added strength of the full 2x6.. It looks tougher and everybody can see the full stringers so there is no question later.

My boat does not have any sort of floor. Full 1"mahogany stringers. Super strong and looks the part.

There is no wrong way in this case.

I have an 18 spectra. The stringers are 2x8 cut to fit so more like 2x7. The outer are 1x4 cut to fit more like 1x3. This is a thread of my new floor build from last year.

So just finished removing all stringers and floor supports. Only one stringer was actually good and it was the last one I removed. $:-\$
Before that, I doubled checked how much I'd need to cut 2x6 down to....and it works out to a 2x4. I can live with that....it's better than I thought it be.

Your mom, am I seeing your build correctly.... is your floor actually higher than the Hull....and doesn't meet the sides....(a gap between floor and bull at the sides)?? Nice build nonetheless!
While I can totally appreciate other people's builds and choices.... I prefer not to have stringers exposed. Other than engine bay. Thank for all the insite!
I'll be starting a project thread soon on my pain.....I mean boat.

Maybe one day I'll join in on some if these meets I keep reading about...

im with you... the less stuff you have to crawl over or stub your toes on the better. drop your stringers down to floor height and make the whole thing flat and keep the floor low so your boat feels deeper and bigger. raising the floor up 1-2" is gonna make a huge difference interior wise with space.

Word! i understand this is on the big side for a jet boat....but...it is my first boat...
ive been on many boats, extremely few jet boats tho. my initial thoughts are to keep stringers the same size all the way....if i could....i would. this will work out. ill post pics so you guys can see. maybe itll be worth a laugh or too...its my first time doing this level of work on a boat. ive done hull work...repairs on all my jet skis. lots of other custom fiberglass work...non marine. maybe im too excited.... my boat buddies....say welcome to boating! cause its been one issue after another....tongue jack takes a dive....making it frustrating to hook up/disconnect. engine hoist doesnt go up high enough to clear gunwales....

My seats cover the floor on the sides and with the hatch open I can slide jackets/umbrellas ect between hull and seat. With a deep hull its a good idea to have a floor on top of stringers for storage ect. I did leave it open in front of seats for leg room.

you know if i had to do it again... id probably drop the floor down in places under the seats to maximize storage. Like the whole rear seat i could get a good 4-6" more room the entire length if i dropped the floor down and made a little sealed box. I've seen people use little sections of PVC pipe to link the "ski locker" etc to the bilge so water can drain. im also considering switching from side tanks to a belly tank so i can get more storage in the sides of the boat.

Is a belly tank hard to find? has anyone made one? If so, would it need to go through an inspection? Uscg maybe.....

you can find em all over craigslist. just need to make sure it fits between your stringers and under your floor.

I had my belly custom made for 300. Its bout a 30g tank an balances the weight perfect. Instead of using a vent for tank, I used a vented rex cap that I opened up just a bit more. I also have a piece of pvc glassed in with a drain plug left in on center ski locker if I need to flush. You have it ripped all apart, so its a good time to map out your wants/needs so you dont decide to do it again.

where would the filler cap go? simplicity would say to run longer fuel filler hose with a few elbows....
beside storage....are there any other benefits to adding belly tank?

pretty much. long filler hose to the fuel fill on the side of the boat. most also run a vent hose along side of it so you can fill it with gas without the pump shutting off a hundred times.

benefits of belly is lower CG and no listing from side to side as the tanks empty. taking 13 gallons out of one side of your boat will shift weight and will impact handling at speed. only 1 fuel sender, only 1 tank so no need for fuel valves, dual gauges or a switch to read senders from each tank.
