78 Southwind Question
« on: April 02, 2014, 12:31:47 PM »
So its been awhile since I've been on the site, I sold my Tahiti due to financial reason in 2012 :( . But as you all know that jet boat owners cant stay away for too long, currently :)  I'm in the process of buying a 78 Southwind with BBF, bored .60 over, roller cams lifters and rockers. My question is from a statement the current owner said, He says the hull noticeable flex to it. Should I be concern with this, or is this normal for this style of hull? Thanks in advance for the advise, and glad to be back.

" noticeable flex " is relative.
Take a look under the bow and see if there is anything you can see that is loose or coming apart or removed for that matter.
In some cases the seating is tied in as a gunnel support and if installed correctly, that could also give a hull "noticeable flex".
Don't forget, hulls are supposed to flex.

Thanks for the response beerjet, I will check and get back to you.  I do know Hulls are suppose to flex, just caught my attention when he said noticeable flex. Kind of made me think Iit was more than normal.

My friend had a Southwind with flex on the top over the bow however we mitigated the issue by using cardboard made a template copied it using wood made a truss for under the bow with a square cutout to still use the bow storage space.  It worked great and gave more piece of mind.  I had a Tahiti that would flex while bombing over rollers but no stress cracks or issues other than it would catch your eye.  But Id take a ride with him before u hand him cash

MorePower-its been on craigslist for awhile I think, I am actually his neighbor. I finally decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on this buy, so I started asking questions and bargaining on the listed price. I will post pics as soon as I remember how to do it, been so long I forgot.

Nice looking T deck.  I helped a buddy re-do his Southwind, it flexed a lot prior to the re-do.  His boat is a 1/4 stringer boat, and the bulk head was coming loose.  The floors are glassed to the hull to tighten up these boats.  If the floor is starting to rot, the hull can flex a lot.  We re- did his and added a single 3/4 stringer down the middle to tie the floor to.  New floor and a new bulkhead glassed in, and she rides tight like a 12 year old girl sco........ well you get the idea ::)
Nice boat, make sure to check out the Southwind Regatta in Sept Jake Yeager puts on down at McIntyre, your boat would make a great addition.
