I am no expert...but I think "the gap" just gets fiberglassed back in.

i figured fiber glass but in his picture it looks like an aluminum plate with bolts or rivets. can't tell

Over the years we have accumulated alot of "stuff" (and I save everything) one of the by products are the cutouts from rigging intakes in new hulls we cut a piece from this grind and shape to fit and in the case of that particular boat we created a "flange/plate to support and attach is (along with seagoing epoxy putty) Tom
