Title: sabre jet hull
Post by: wet dream on January 21, 2010, 07:42:04 PM
I bought a 77 sabre jet at the end of last summer and I wanted to know what everyone thinks about them.My RPMs are at 4000 and im doing about 65mph with from what I understand is a stock 460 with a stock 12jc.is that about right?would like to know  more about the thing how much power it can handle is there any flaws in these hulls and what can i do to make it launch harder.               thanks in advance

I like the Sabre Jets, my buddy has a 1980 Sabre jet daycruiser, a couple years ago I put in a new floor and went through the 460 Packajet with a JE pump, Nicely built boat, the gelcoat is still beautiful for a 30 year old boat...

The thing is, I think you need to take a look at your tach. 65 MPH at only 4,000 RPM is more than a little impressive, probably turning closer to 4,600 or only moving about 55-60MPH..

The only deficiency that I found on the Sabre Jet was the bottom side of the deck had a layer of particle board laminated into it, it was coming apart and needed to be redone. I had to laminate plywood in place of it, a lot of work, but well worth  it in the end.,

Well a friend of mine let me know how fast we were going from his jet ski (could be wrong)so next time I go out I'll take the GPS.Not sure how accurite the gauges are since thay appear to be original.time 4 some upgrades I'm looking to buy a jetovator or a place diverter 4 the roost and was thinking about a bowl stuffer 4 a better hole shot.also would like to know how much power it can handle befor i screw something up.well thanks for the info GT as I have a feeling Im going to have more questions in the future  ;D

You can't believe your data with the equipment and methods your using.  Don't know how good the rest of the boat is also. A stuffer is racing gear and not realy nessisary if you're going to the river to make "roosts" A good loader would do you more good.  First check the motor over, leak down, timing, fuel system. Check your tach. If the motor's good and you don't have a big impeller sounds like your tach is not right.  If it was my money in a new boat I'd start with a good pump check and if you realy want to make room for improvements later I'd redo the intake with a plate and shoe, put a split bowl on it and check the tolerences.  If there is partical board in the deck that needs to go per GT. Are stringers full length? and check the bottom for a "hook". Good pump, no hook, full stringers, no sign of stress cracks in the gel?  Now you can hit it with HP as you wish (I'd still keep that under 650-700) Jetovator for fun? Sure why not!

that is a good looking boat...would love to know if it is a full stringer....would definately limit you in your pony range....also looks like it has a pretty deep entry meaning it will ride good in chop, but as far as hauling ass it would take alot more hp to do so....when your building any boat you half to take into consideration what hull you are working with! your boat would definately make a nice lake cruiser probably in the mid seventies with proper pump, engine set-up i wouldnt really want to push it more then that in my personal opinion....

I think Its a 1/4 stringer. The stringers stop right in back of the rear seat. :banghead:

From my understanding I wouldnt go much over 600hp in a 1/4 stringer boat. Just what I have been told a few times.

what would be the right way to go about making it a full stringer

forget about it. 600 hp should be plenty thanks

Buy a full stringer boat....

But seriously, for the amount of money and time it would take to do a conversion, you could have upgraded to a better hull...Absolut huge amount of work, and truthfully, I would not recommend doing it unless the hull was obtained for say...Free and all of the wood needed to be replaced.

A reputable shop would charge in excess of $3500 for such an undertaking.

I am not using my boat this year, and maybe next (I have three boats  :screwy: ) If you want to go 80+, I have the hull for you. My White Trash has seen 85 MPH with approx.680 BBC horsepower, it weighs very little and has full mahogany stringers....It does get "light" and I have added a droop snoot to try and improve it. (it used to lift the tail)...

12JG, full droop, manual Diverter, SS "A" Impeller, tandem trailer and top secret loader among others, PM me if you are interested.  ;)

I am going to chime is as a conscientious objector, aluminum heads make more power than iron heads in most (if not all) higher RPM applications, the weight loss is a bonus...The reason is heat transfer, iron heads, once hot, stay hot....Aluminum heads give their heat up very easily to the water so you can have the combustion chamber hot but don't have the excess heat in the rest of the head...What difference does it make you will ask next?  :sly:  The intake side of the head stays way cooler than the exhaust side thus allowing little change in the air charge temperature, the colder the air charge, the denser the air (read more air to combine with fuel to generate more power).  If aluminum heads don't make more power at higher RPM then why put them on any engine at all, how well do you think a Corvette would run with a set of late Vortec's VS> a set of D port aluminum heads?

Now on a different note, you brought up a supercharger, that takes everything I just said and throws it out the window, why you will ask next?  :sly: Because the air charge is being forced into the cylinder heads and while under pressure the density of the air charge will have little to no effect......... :banghead:

So while you are right (a little) you are actually more wrong on a naturally aspirated deal (which most of us just happen to have...).

Welcome aboard, keep your Sabre at under 70 MPH, keep the HP reasonable on the quarter stringer deal, and more importantly have fun.

BTW that hull is heavy due to the fact that it is a quarter boat...The reason is a heavier layup to make up for the lack of the rigidity of the stringer structure....some would say built for comfort, not necessarily speed...

There are some of the coolest people on the planet on these boards (Ralph included) so a little respect can go a long way.....Just my opinion....(which means squat, but remember I said conscientious objector  :screwy: )

Not bad if I may say myself,GT always has something good to say. well I guess a place diverter & a loader is all it will get along with a rebuild of the pump and another boat 4 some real power.I just would have liked to have this boat hit 75 or 80 :o

Thank you... ;D Now my hat wont fit... :banghead:  ;)

FWIW, a Place Diverter and a loader will help almost any boat become a better performing package....
