I know it's been talked about before but could you guys help me with some places that replace stringers? I live you the high desert and don't mind taking it down the hill for an excellent job. Thanks guys!!!!!

are you talkin about victorville high desert? if so gs marine isnt too far from you then I think maybe martinez I thought I saw some one say something about them. why not just do them yourself just out of curiosity?

It's going to be a pretty penny to do them. But pats fiberglass in upland does great work. I would take it on but I just don't have the time.

Guys I usually do everything myself even down to building my own engines but these days I work so much and don't have the time and much less the patience. I don't even know where to begin. Yes high desert victorville. What do you guys think it would cost to have done?

Got off the phone with a place called Orange County Boat Repair. Anybody heard of them? Anyways I have 1/4 stringers on the boat and he quoted me $760. Does that sound right?

Depends in how much of the work you have to do.
Get references and make some calls.
If all they are doing is the quarter stringers and nothing else, plan on the price doubling once they tear into it.
Just my experience.

I took my boat there a couple months ago and they replaced my quarter stringers. They quated me 1200 then it ended up being 2000. They did good work but I didnt like how they wanted me to drop the boat off and it sat outside for 2 weeks before they touched it and when I drove by it was always on the street in front of the building. And I didnt like getting spending that much and finding out a couple weeks later that the transom is rotted

Called them and he wouldn't give me a quote until I brought it down. The place from orange quoted that price with me pulling the engine myself which I was gonna do anyways. Not looking into double the quote price though. Just looking to get them repaired before the river trip I have planned in September.

In all honesty, I would have a major problem with someone who quoted me something like that over the phone. I was a boat mechanic most of my adult life (professionally) and I would never in a million years quote something like that without the advantage of touch, taste, smell...
Why do you think the quote is so low? To get you in the door...
There are $400 worth of just materials to do that job..., Not even figuring retail. :screwy:
$760 my ass! Tell him you want to see the breakdown... Bet you a bucket of chicken he can't do it. You won't leave that place without a $1500 to $2000 final tally.
Could be mistaken, doubt I am. What's his hourly rate? $40? :sly:

Honestly, this sounds like a straight shooter... I know you probably don't see it that way.
I just did a Ski Sanger last year, I charged the guy $2500 and I never pulled the motor. I am not even a shop. ;)

Thanks I really appreciate your feedback I only really have at most a grand for this repair right now and $1500 would not make that budget at all. What to do?

I'm with you GT. This is my bro that needs this done. All the input from you guys is why this post was started. I dident feel right on the price and to good to be true. It's not a issue to pay more for good work. That is where this issue lays. It is also not a issue to take the boat a distance to be done right. If there was more time we would do it our self but running out of time and time to do this with our first time. Bottom line if there is any buddy that can help or do this for a side job let's rock .

Being is that this is your rookie season. Go polyester resin.
You will likely need more than a gallon, but buy one for now. (you can always buy more resin).
I buy mine from TAP Plastics, but there are many supply houses that have it in stock. Maybe an auto body supply house?
There are two trains of thought. I buy laminating resin and surface cure agent when doing Poly... You build everything up with not surface curing resin and then the last coat you do with resin, add the appropriate amount of SCA.
You will not have a lot of time with the poly to work with it, so small batches reduces waste.
You should be able to find clear KD Douglas Fur in your local lumber yard. You probably have 2X6 stringers.
You will need a gallon of acetone (cheap) and a whole bunch of disposable cheap wood handled paint brushes. Don't forget the wood stir sticks.
Pick up mixing buckets (I use the one quart size).
Grab a couple cheap drop cloths (the white canvas ones) and a couple rolls of Scotch Blue 2" tape. Tape off everything you don't want covered in resin.
I highly recommend picking up a couple or resin rollers designed for fiberglass cloth. Not a fiber roller, but a grooved aluminum roller for squeegeeing the cloth of air bubbles.
You will need virtually three times the surface area you are going to repair in roving and since we are talking Poly, some mat.
Grab a jar of Cab-O-Sil to make a gel like putty to bed the stringers into. Bondo can work, but not nearly as strong.
You are going to use up probably 15 or twenty grinding discs for a 4-1/4" grinder, also cant hurt to have a big 'ol box of rags...
Lastly, get a good quality respirator and if you can swing it, some Tyvek disposable suits. (Grainger) The itch, if your not used to it can drive you insane.
Also pick up some Gold Bond medicated powder and cover yourself in it, it will fill the pores in your skin and prevent the itchies from getting too bad.
Before you rip it apart, measure everything and take a bolt inventory and replace them all, grab a tube of 3M 5200 sealant too... Great chit. (watch out for the sticker shock, but buy it anyway...).
I am certain I forgot some stuff, but this will get you started.
You should plan on having to spend about $400 by the time the smoke clears.
You may want to also pick up some resin pigment to tint the last coat of resin to make it purdy. This is by far the least expensive way to go.

Well after some research I pulled the engine in my boat and took it to Pats fiberglass in Upland. Charged me $1,100 to completely replace the stringers, replace the front bulkhead do to rotting and brush gel in the engine bay. Came out awesome and now I'm excited to put my engine back in it.
