Title: Transome tie downs
Post by: 2savage4you on December 17, 2008, 04:39:26 PM: I dont have any on mine and was wondering whats the best way to do it....

By that i mean how to get it even and exact so it dont look ghetto :sly:

And if you got some pics to post up as reference for me thats great ;)
As you can see i have nothing to tie down to, and i really dont want to wrap it around the pump to secure it while towing..

Post by: GAWnCA on December 17, 2008, 04:47:24 PM: Those hooks will work just fine. You have to connect to the trailer so attach some hooks to the frame rails.

Post by: 76 Bonneville on December 17, 2008, 06:05:42 PM: For 30 years it didn't have tie downs, why does it need it now? Looks cleaner without them. Niether one of my boats have them. From the early 70's when they came up with the floating bar for the front, we never had tie downs.
Actually I know it would be more secure with tie downs but I personnally dont see the need for them (yet).

If you decide to install them, make sure you back them up with some wood, glass and big washers. Thats so when you want the boat to pull the trailer up with it when you cross those RR tracks you dont stress the transom.

Fortunately it was pretty noticeable from inside the truck. I can just imagine what a boat would do if the truck gets involved in even a minor collision. I'm just saying . . .

i like the transom on the bahner looks clean as hell with them eyes on there IDK...maybe something trick like a blue anodized flush mount one would look cool

I think the reason they look so massive it that he has a thing on the straps that stop wear. I've seen something like that for cars where a sheep skin thing crosses over your shoulder. It does look like seat belt strapping.

Post by: GT Jets on December 18, 2008, 11:02:15 PM: Just for the record, I'm running on about 6 hours of sleep in the last 72 hours, but do yourself a huge favor and go pick up the "U" bolt type rings (Sea Dog makes some inexpensive ones), when you go to install them, Measure to the middle and make a mark (I use dry erase markers), then simply measure out evenly and down from the moulding, I always make sure the boat is level then I can just make sure the eyes are "plumb"...

The rings you showed a picture of are not very strong because they pull sideways and tend to crack the gel.

LOL, you know I just picked up the boat and it was raining/snowing like crazy in California. To be completely honest I never even looked at to see how it was or wasnt tied to the trailer before it was hooked up to the truck. I noticed that it was tied down but never really "Looked" at it.

PS. I have read that it is required in all 50 states to have the boat tied down but couldnt tell you whether or not it actually is.

Just my .02 guys, oh and gal ;D Myself I feel much better knowing that the back of the boat isnt bouncing around, the way some of the roads are these days ;D mark

I'd prefer not to put them on ...So what I do is,I don't know if your gonna have a ski tow or not (with your Bahner bein' a race boat and all :o ::)) lol... But when I go local I don't do anything,just drive cautiously,but if I head out your way from my house,I will just run a tie down from the ski tow down to the trailer. Works perfect and no tie downs! ;D :D ;)

He was taking his boat to Lake Mead I believe and was towing a boat with his motorhome. Some guy was driving in reverse on the right shoulder and lost control and swerved into the right lane and clipped the rear of either the motorhome or trailer (I dont recall) and the made my co-worker lose control of the motorhome. To make a long story short, the boat came off of the trailer (no tie-downs) and went into the cabin area of the motorhome killing both his mother and wife! I maybe a little fuzzy on all of the details because I am going by memory and was told this at a meeting at work. Either way, use tie-downs!

Agreed , but some are pretty cool looking just a lil more pricey...

I will probably stay local with the boat so i really should not worry about the tie downs, BUT i dont like the sense of not being safe or unsecure . What has worked for you might not work for me , and anybody who has been down any road in Bullhead or the surrounding area knows our roads are pretty f-ed up ;)

I will be installing them, but a different pair. Something cool looking..

Post by: repoman on January 28, 2009, 05:21:17 AM: you can use the pump as a good place to hold down the back. if you have access to a sewing machine this makes it easier but there are plenty of places you can have the work done at...

you will need...

a couple good ratchet straps...don't buy the harbor freight shit. its cheap for a reason. then get some extra nylon strapping.

get the loose nylon and rap it around your pump starting from the top. allow it to have enough so it can give you a little bit of a "lead" on each end...then with your sewing machine, fold the ends over and sew it creating a loop on each end...then use your ratchets to tighten each side evenly. you don't need to wrench it down too tight. in fact...be careful to not tighten to tight. just something. if you have eyes on your trailer already then your set...if not search for some steel ones and weld them on...presto!! you have a secure ass with no extra holes to put in the transom. i have several straps i could sell if anyone wants em...there mad by a company called Macs strap co. if wanted i can shoot some pix up later...its a little too late to drive to the boat. i should be sleeping! what has this site done to me!!!! :screwy: :sly: :screwy: :sly:
