My boats been repainted and the numbers are gone. An I going to have a problem with this it's currently reg in Nevada and I'm going to reg in my name in Az. Are there any other numbers located anywhere else. It's a 77 Southwind 18'. Thanks Tad

i just looked at mine and I don't have a vin either. I figure just keep the tags current and there shouldn't be anything to worry about

laws state that the HIN needs to be stamped into the hull OR on a placard somewhere on the hull. i would take your current HIN from your registration card, go to a trophy shop and have them engrave it onto a piece of metal and then affix that to the inside of the transom. that way if it ever comes up you can point and say "thats the way its always been..."

vin is for car, hin is for boat/vessel.

are you talking about the uscg placard with the make/model and how much weight it can hold? thats different than the HIN number. those are only required on a boat under 20 feet...

that part that says HIN and has 4 numbers. Is the middle 4 numbers of the number on my pinkslip? Idk much about this stuff. I'm kinda new to boats.

Both of your boats should have the HIN number stamped into the right rear of the hull. That started around '71-'72.

Just stamp the HIN #'s on some 3/4 inch by 1/8 inch aluminum. That's what I did with mine when I re gelled it.

under 20', built after a certain date MUST have... us 21 footers can get away without having one.

Stamp kit at Harbor Freight. Its how mine is as well.

"to be sold as a 'new' boat, by the manufacturer", Not required on a 30+ year old used boat.
The manufacturer must follow the HP limits, too, the original/first owner doesn't...

That's what I did but just affixed to outside of transome so nobody would say anything and I had an extra one mad and hid it on the inside if someone removed the outside one. Trophey shop only charged me like 10 bucks for 2 and they knew what I was talking about so they have done it before.
