That, and when they chine walk do to windy conditions, you end up with a giant load in your shorts :o
Runner bottoms were designed for higher stability at speed...

A runner bottom has 2 (either 5/8" or 7/8" deep tunnels more or less) runners on either side of the bottom . These are real easy to spot since the cav plates are set up on both planes (plates are stepped ) of the bottom. These hulls are ideal for the straghts .

Dude! I need that model!!!!!! Already have a Shiada flatty, and an outboard tunnel...
-
:D That is some bad ass shit right there huh . I thought the same thing when I found the picture .
Here you can see it from the underside , marked as "Tunnel reliefs" You can also see how the plates are stepped from the tunnels to the lower keel plate . Dead giveaway !

Late 70's early 80's when flatties cracked the 150 barrier they started barrel rolling through the lights and were loosing a driver a week. I believe that was the era when we lost Ray Casseli and Vern Admiral on the same pass in Oakland. The solution was the runner bottom.

holy crap I knew it was dangerous but dang!!! :(
People often forget how dangerous things used to be. Any old racing.
-
Ditto the old stuff! Some of you know I race vintage MX bikes. I just got my trans fixed and it took 4 months. I was expecting to race this weekend for the first time since Feb. I was pumped and started the prep work and promptly found a cracked rim. Would have really hated to explode a wheel off a jump. That would not have been pretty. :o
some times design change is good.

The runner bottom came out in 71. It was Irv Brendell and he started out with the name Brendella boats. He changed it to Hondo in the 60's until his divorce in the mid 70's and went back to the brendella name because Peggy was awarded the Hondo business.

I think he named the dog after the John Wayne movie. I don't remember, the entire story is in one of these books somewhere. :banghead:

This boat is kinda special to me cuz I got it from the guy who picked it up from Sanger in '82 and only one guy, Phil Stock, built the motor and freshened it. So, it hasnt been passed around an screwed all up or sat in a feild for ten years and "restored" five times. Oh and Khul himself did the blower pump lines and stuff. Kinda rare, IMO. I think it needs a BB paint job when and if I ever get a job again, I may start doing some builds/restorations on my own.
