Title: Carpet backing

I am currently in the market for some marine grade carpet. Is it important that the backing of the carpet be rubber? I've seen other carpets without the rubber backing on it. What's the difference and will it get mildew under the carpet or not disburse the water? I'm not so much worried about the quality of the carpet more than what's going to happen if it gets wet.  Also does anyone know a good place to buy some? I'm not looking to spend a ton of money on this. Thoughts?

UFO carries the rubber back marine carpet. Not much of a selection. They have black and gray.

Wholesale marine has a good selection and the price is pretty reasonable. The rubber back helps from getting the wood floor wet.

Does it have to be rubber backing?  The guy at Home Depot said that he did a couple boats and rubber backing has cracks in it.  He said water gets in those cracks and doesn't evaporate like a carpet without the backing.  He recommended an indoor/outdoor with no rubber backing and some Henry's adhesive for marine.  Will this ruin my deck?  I just recently put a fresh Fiberglas mat down.

Yes it should be rubber backing. Anything else and the glue seeps through the carpet, discolors  and leaves hard spots. Use Roberts outdoor glue from the Home Depot and lightly scrape Trall the glue onto the hull and then lay the carpet. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I used home depot outdoor carpet and 3M spray adhesive. Price is right. It has no rubber. Glue did not seep through. Carpet is thin so its not plush under your feet. But it looks good for my back yard boat build

A1 Foam in Santa Ana or JJ fabrics in Railto both carry rubber backed marine grade carpet.
