Title: How do I ???
Post by: skee on June 03, 2009, 09:41:19 AM
I need to replace the wood on my seats and cant afford to pay to have it done right now :banghead: So..my question is...How do I make the front seat backs? How do I curve the wood and what type of wood should I use? I just spent $800 on 2 new gas tanks at Imco,so my money is just about gone for this project.....Any help? Called Martinez Interior's and he say's about $1800 for the 2 buckets and rear bench..and I just don't have it right now.....

Hi Skee,  You can use 1/2" or 5/8" exterior plywood and coat it with resin or epoxy.  As for the curved back, I think you can get 1/4" or 3/8" plywood to bend and give it a coat or 2 of resin/epoxy.  Screw the back to the seat base and it should pretty much form itself.  I think Dozzr did a write up on seat building.  Look here  http://www.socaljetboats.com/index.php?topic=3087.msg43337#msg43337

Steam the plywood, you can bend it anyway you want then. Once it's all said and sone, yeah, resin the hell out of it and you got a 30 year set of seats.

The seat backs in by boat had cuts in the outside of the curve about 1/2-3/4" apart to allow the wood to bend a little easier.  I think it could be done with a table saw or skill saw with the blade only exposed about 1/8-3/16".  Then after it is formed hit it with a couple pieces of fiberglass mat to help stiffen it up.

I used 1/2 with kerfs
soak with water for a couple of hours
bend and screw to seat base
filled kerfs with bondo
resin and mat inside and out
