I replaced my fuel tank carpeting 4 months ago and the carpet on the passenger side tank has some spots that are melted. I posted the problem with a picture on another forum, and some members are saying that the reflection of the sun off my billet battery box is what's melting the carpet. Is this even possible? Some spots look almost as if someone took a soldering iron to the carpet. I don't have any fuel leaks that I am aware of. I was disconnecting the battery as I was thinking that I maybe had some sort of electrical short in the boat.

Where is the fuel fill in relation to the melted streaks? I have seen polished parts do some stuff that rates quite high on my Weird-shit-ometer, but this one would be tops... :screwy:
Are the tanks grounded (just thinking out loud here)...?

I don't think that the battery box would do that.. You would think that the spot would be bigger than that. How old is that battery?

What is under the gunwale just above that? Pull the battery and crawl in there with a flashlight, mirror and magnifying glass.....Melting wire insulation? would appear that something is dripping from above and melting it. I doubt gasoline would do that on marine carpet....... :screwy:

I posted info on this over at pb...I had reflection off my breather which caused burns. On the right underneath you can see it starting..

I put a small round piece of vinyl on the top of the breather and its fixed...

not sure if you solved the prob of the carpet but i looked at it for awhile and it sorta looks like the sparkplug wirers arcing! fire the boat up at night turn all the lights off and see if they are.
