hey guys names Jake. im in the process of restoring my 78 cheetah. ive got avaliable to me an industrial sewing machine to do my seats. has anyone on here ever done their own upolsthery? ive been doing alot of reading and research on it and i think with a lil pratice I could do it no problem. thanks for any info

Most first time upholstery jobs turn out looking like a snug fitting slip cover :thumbdown:
Many guys will build the wood framing with good success then spend the money to get a professional upholstery shop to finish it.

I looked into doing my own interior but after looking around at materials and foam it was almost going to cost me the same as if a shop would do it. The quality of a pro vs. mine would be worth the extra coin, but I did build my seat frames and covered them in resin to save some money in that area.

sewing is like an art. sure anyone can run materials thru a machine and get em to stick together but doing it straight with a giant seat and then going into a curve while having 2 or more pieces plus a piping with foam and getting it to come out right... good luck.
like mentioned before i built the seat frames the way i wanted them and then dropped em off at an upholstery shop and let them work their magic.

that came out great for a first timer. a few wrinkles here and there but looks pretty nice. curious what he's got in it so far with materials.

Ya, I think he did a fantastic job. Ya, a few wrinkles.....but that's okay...especially if he saved some money. Besides, he has bragging rights now too...
I'll find out more on Sunday. We are supposed to meet out on our lake for some "Spring testing" and I'll let ya know what he's got into his seats. I know he bought the commercial sewing machine used on Craigslist.....I think he paid $25 for it. Also, I think he got most of the fabric for free....or one heck of a decent price.

Just fyi I'm looking at about 1700 to get two side seats foamed and coverd

geez!! i went and got 1/4 sew foam 1/8 piping and 4 yards of marine grade vinyl enough to do one bucket seat with enough exta to mess up a few times. it was 65 dollars for everything, so i figured id try to do one and see how it goes that way if it doesnt work out for me im not out all the money for all the materials.
