Attaching side panels

Going to be doing my interior soon. I am adding some small side panels to cover up my tanks and transom. I need to build the panels for the upholstery guy, but before I start I wanted to see what options I have for attaching the panels to the gunnel. I have seen guys screw them in with beauty rings or have bolts stick out from behind and go through the gunnel with a nut.

In my dads old boat he had a clip that slide behind the gunnel. Kind of looked like a large aluminum money clip.

Any other ideas? Pics would help too

How much area are you trying to cover?

I used carriage bolts an fiber glassed the head with tension on bolt during glassing. This allowed the bolt to seat into wood for proper seal/strength. If you don't mind having a few holes...go for it. Its how mine is for a clean look having the fabric over bolts. Just keep in mind that the bolts need to be in arms reach. You could also fiberglass mounting points hanging off your gunnel to attach without drilling into hull.

I decided to use one of these in the front corner and use "z" brackets in the middle and rear of the panel.

Hook the panel in and push this deal until it clicks.

One fastener and you can pull the panel back out with primitive tools and about two seconds.

I bought mine from Amazon but have not finished the interior yet.

Can't wait.

Depending on how much area you need to cover, you should be able to use one latch per panel.

Thnx for the responses guys. Yourmom I thought about that idea, but I'd prob have to remove the seats to remove those panels (when needed) which would be a pain.

GT. I looked at similar hardware, but your look a lot nicer. I wish you had some time on them so you could tell me how they function.

The areas are small. 10" tall by 36" long on both sides. Then maybe one going across the transom (but probably not). That panel will be about 48" long.

Does anyone know of the large looking money clip style ones I referred to?

I have used the quick latches on another project boat, they were used to hold a scoop on top of an engine cover.

The brackets are easy.

Basically it is a piece of aluminum stock bent into a "Z" shape.

The money clip ones you're talking about were made by Taylor Made. Not sure if they still make them or not.

Thnx for the foot work GT. I think I'll look into using your first option. Bending the aluminum won't be an issue with my neighbors brake. I'll order a couple and see what I come up with.

I used pull pins for my piece that goes across the back of rear seats in front of engine. When I want to work on engine, I pull the pins and that part slides out an out of the way.

Hey GT could post some pictures of your mounting? How exactly do those damn z clips work? Screw them to the hill and then drill a hole in the back of the panel and just hook it on?
