Title: Russell gunnel gas tank help (brackets rusted)
Post by: bills79southwind on April 30, 2012, 12:19:21 PM
Hey all,

I'm doing a restoration and the old gunnel brackets for my Russell gunnel gas tanks are rusted out.  I picked up IMCO's brackets but the hole patter is way off.  The Russells are much closer together (3.5") and the IMCO's are 4.5".  I need to either fill the holes and go with the IMCO's or find Russell's which seems impossible.  Just looking for suggestions.  thanks in advance.

Drill new holes in the brackets?

Depending on where you're located, there are several people on here, including myself, that could make you a nice set of 'em to
Match you're old ones.

We need a picture.........Wheeze a visual group  8)

I say use a chunk of aluminum to cross bolt it (bolt the aluminum to the original holes and both holes in the bracket)....Only needs to be 1/4" thick and the width of the bracket....

The aluminum could even be polished or powder coated... :sly:

OK.. i'll take some pictures of the holes when I get home tonight. The holes are drilled through the hull and are thru bolted which I guess is standard practice?  I'll also see about drilling new holes in the IMCO brackets if there is room to do so.  The custom route sounds appealing.  I would need them for 8" tanks.  How much would then run.  Thank you both for your responses.

I'm on the east coast (MD), but would welcome a new set matching the old hole pattern. Unfortunately the old ones were so rusted that I threw them out.  I can measure the holes on center if that would work?

Looks like I'll have to fill the old holes and go with the new brackets from IMCO marine.   :banghead:

I decided to use the existing holes and use the IMCO brackets.  I just drilled a new hole in the bracket..  I'll post pics later..
