What determines whether the steering wheel in on the left or right side of a boat?

I've alwats seen jet drives on the left and props on the right.

I/O's seem to be on the right side as well.

The only center helm I have ever seen was on the ROOTIN TOOTIN RASBERRY. May she float again soon.

My friend's gull wing was a center steer up until very recently JP Marine moved it to the left.

 My Daytona (outboard) has left side steering ,  and my Sprint was center steering.

left is right and right is wrong 

That makes sense to me.

mines on the left(ob) But I think it should be and the right, so thing about a coast guard thing or something(cannel buoy)

On my jet, the steering wheel is on the right.

Check this out, seems the reason is pretty damn stupid, most boat builders years ago were european where they drive on the right (wrong) side of the damn road.

 Some of the company names were Chris Craft, Century, Carver, just to name a popular few. Who knew?

Agreed, or at least mostly agreed , there was a lot about this topic I didn't include, one of the other reasons were that it was about comfort also (left hannded versus right), this info actually came from a Maritime surveyors manual from the '70's where it actually spelled out what determined the helm location of pleasureboats, this did not include ships, most ship helms are centered even today (visibility and communication?) Theres another thing that didn't come up, how many I/O's have you driven with a foot throttle as compared to a Jet? Not many...Not trying to come off as a smart ass, I just used to read all of the time and some very useless stuff stuck!!!! The funny part is I thought books would help make me smarter, but it made me question stuff even more. "Knowhatamean" Think of some books and manuals like "If you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance baffle 'em with BS". Also not many boats had steering wheels when the auto began.
