Marine Carpet
« on: February 02, 2010, 06:50:17 PM »
so anyway i need to once again redo the carpet in my boat....that's because with some arm twisting...just kidding...anyway i bought the home depot stuff, and after one season of running it fuzzed up on me...anyway i would like to throw some more carpet in the boat, and not half to worry about it for more than one season....any good suggestions? i was eyeballing some from cabelas that looked pretty decent, but anyway what does everyone one else recommend...and then that leads into the next question...what is everyone using to hold down the carpet? i bought some somewhat expensive carpet glue, that is actually probably held in by a screwed down tool box, and a screwed down gas pedal...basically it is lifiting, and that isnt going to work for me....i was thinking possibly that the 3m spray adhiesive would actually hold the carpet down better, but who knows....maybe i should use gorilla glue, and leave the headache for someone else....what's everyone got?

Take your old carpet out, clean the living shit out of the area you want to carpet, use some mineral spirits and a rag. Go to Lowe's and get the black marine/indoor/outdoor carpet, it works great, holds up to the sun and the weather. To make it easy, take some measurements and cut your carpet to a close fit on the driveway. get in the boat generously spray this stuff:

On both the boat and the carpet, give it about 5 minutes to tack up. When you put your carpet down have a heavy round object to roll out any bubbles you get under it. At the stringers tuck it tight into the corners and staple as low as you can get the staple gun, please use aluminum or stainless staples. wrap your stringers, repeat staple at opposite side.
Trim the excess carpet with a sharp razor knife.

Let it sit for a day or so and Scotchgard the living shit out of it!

Just so you know, this stuff from Overton's http://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=35912&pdesc=Exceptional_Overtons_Daystar_16_oz_Marine_Carpeting_6_wide&r=view&from=grid is the exact same manufacturer, weight, backing, etc that the stuff from Lowe's is. Just an FYI

Skip not to put down your methods, but this has come up before, in another thread. The stuff I bought from Westmarine, both the carpet and the glue is fricking awesome  I now have what maybe 4 years on it and it STILL looks like new  Kids and all, the heat, the sand, the abuse, (kids), the accidental spillage of beer, (don't tell anyone) (I don't drink and drive)  LOL  It costs a little more, but it definately is worth it     Just my .02

The only thing I do want to add, is that I ran outta the glue from WestMarine for one section in the back, so I bought the SHIT from homo depot, (you listening Ray LOL) and that crap did't stick for beans. Lasted for one season and was coming up, again just my .02

Don't sweat it Nancy, I'm not an expert in anything, I know just enough about a lot of things to get me in trouble. I've had great success with the stuff from Lowe's. I've used it in hot rods, boats, a 61 Chev Brookwood station wagon (never should have sold that car 348 & 4 Speed) At any rate, carpet is carpet.

When exactly are we going to the river?
