Title: what wood for new seat frames?
Post by: Duke on November 25, 2011, 02:13:27 PM: so after i took off the old vinyl i noticed the frames were not as nice as i thought they would be. so my question is, whats kind of wood do i want to use for my new frames? im going to cut the bucket part into strips for the curved part and fiberglass over it for strenght.

i saw a sheet of birch that looked like it would make for some nice seats, but $45 has me thinking it might be overkill and id better ask first. i have thompsens water sealer from when i did the bunks on the trailer. so it'll get sealed in that stuff.

Marine ply is double the cost.

Post by: Your Mom on November 25, 2011, 08:12:44 PM: Regular ply is fine with a good sealer. You only need to fiberglass the joining areas for strength. Small 3-4" wide by whatever length pieces of fiber on those areas. You can do relief cuts in the wood and also bend with the grain for curve...or soak the wood and wrap/tie it around something round and let sit till dry.

Post by: Nordie on November 26, 2011, 09:06:19 AM: Like all these guys said...1/2 inch...the only other thing I did was the bases of the seats I used 3/4...and the other thing I did was buy 7 ply besides 5, but that was just me...probably a little more over kill, but sometimes when you cut ply you will have cut through a knot in the wood, these knots would be in a ply in the middle of the wood...i would fill them with resin...

Post by: lbhsbz on November 26, 2011, 11:44:18 AM: Home depot down in long beach has some very nice, almost cabinet grade 7 ply stuff from Chile....and it's cheap. I used this for my bases and then 15/32" or whatever for the backs. I glass the curves and joints, then just resin the rest.

another tip, like how you see in 76bonneville's and mine, leave a little tack strip along the bottom inside so the upholstery guy has something to shoot staples into, and DONT go crazy with the glass there or else they wont be able to shoot the staples through it. also no sharp corners.

So are you laying fiberglass in the corners then putting down the tack strip over it?Also are you resoning the tack strip or just leaving it raw?

I've heard people tell me if im going to resin it not to use marine grade plywood cause it doesnt soak the resin like the regular plywood does,did you experience this?
