Type of wood for sub floor?
« on: May 28, 2016, 05:11:35 PM »
Just wondering what type of plywood I should use for my subfloor, can't find any marine grade ply at Home Depot or Lowes and the workers I asked there were clueless so I figured someone on here would know what would work besides marine grade 👍🏻️

Oh no not the greenies.........the old "Beaumont" crowd will come running when they hear this. ;D

You don't need marine grade.

Exterior grade,  plywood is fine,  be sure to glass all sides. I live to hit it with a hot coat before installing it,  basically cut some resin with MEK or acetone and slop on a quick coat of resin only,  the skin it with some light cloth. You can fill any voids with filler like Bondo or Cabosil.

CDX is more than adequate if you are going to carpet over it.

Sweet, thanks GT! Going to go back to Home Depot and get the wood tomorrow. Also, do you think a gallon of resin and 16 sq ft of fiber glass mats will be enough for this? Goes from right in front of the 1/4 stringers to right under the gauges.

A gallon will be plenty.

Do the last coat with the wax additive. It will allow the resin to dry 100% at the top to sand, glue, gel coat...ect. I used the sewn thick fiber cloth from a fiberglass facility in one layer. Most likely stronger/as strong than you doing 3 layers of HD mat.

So should I get the bondo mats or the cloth? Or were you talking about just for the top layer/final coat

I like working with cloth better, but for reasons that may not effect you. I use epoxy resin. You can't use mat with epoxy.

You are using polyester,  mat will be fine,  I would still finish it with light cloth.  It's just easy to work with and cones out very smooth.

Personal preference really.
