Remove & Replace motor in an I/O
« on: January 28, 2013, 10:28:33 AM »
I got a 83 Carrera open bow, 21 footer. It has a Volvo Penta 350 and a Volvo Penta 290 outdrive. The motor got HOT and is gotta go( spark plugs are caked with water/oil mix).
I found me a Vortec 350 outta a 05 Mastercraft with the Electronic throttle body. The computer(ECM) is still hooked up and is a, hook the hot and ground up and go(plug and play). The motor has about 20 minutes on it. It also has a cracked block( in the same spot as usual, beow the exhaust manifolds). I am going to do a JB weld job to the block.
I have the money budgeted to have a shop do the work, but am considering saving the money and doing it myself.
How big a job is aligning the motor with the outdrive?
Do I have to have any specility tools or can I imprevise?
Will the 290 outdrive hold up to the 340 HP from the new motor?
Any help would be much appreciated

20 minutes on a motor and the block is cracked?   :sly:

350's are a dime a dozen... and cheap.  Keep looking or pull yours and take it to a shop to be rebuilt.

It was ran for 20 minutes in a test hull at Mastercraft. Parked it in the yard and winter time came around. Pretty common thing around here.

I haven't been able to find any in this condition, and especially not for 400 bones.

I'm not really too interested in the cracked block part of the equation as much as the removal and installation. And can this outdrive handle the HP of the Vortec.

From what I understand the Volvo outdrives are pretty stout. But a cracked block no thanks. If its 400 drop in with all the electronic fuel equip id pick it up and get a new block and swap.

The swap should be srtaight forward, However, the '05 has the small crank/flywheel pattern (1 pc rear main seal), and the early ('83) will have the larger pattern (2 pc rear main seal). looks like you'll need a late (1pc rear main seal) flywheel. (probably on the '05 5.7 already) As far as JB weld, I've seen a cylinder JB'd and then bored, so a water jacket SHOULD be fine, your choice though.

Not really any alignment concerns on the Volvo. They used a splined shock plate. It is likely the motor in the original Volvo was an LT1 270 HP, The slight increase of HP is non issue with the 290, the 290 Volvo has virtually the same internals as a Mercruiser Bravo I and are good in stock form to well over 400 HP. Prop selection is going to suck though... Keep your eyes peeled for the Volvo Duo Prop lover and do a swap.

I have a very similar boat (1992 Carerra Elite 20.5 open bow) and am using a Bravo drive with a nasty small block.

Good luck. I could have picked you up a Mercruiser Black Scorpion block with less than 100 hours on it for $200 a few weeks ago, I passed because I already have three..

Just for peace of mind, this is a very easy swap, you may need to get tricky with the exhaust manifolds though, the Mercs mount a bunch of crap to them and they are different than the VP......

If anybody has a step by step PDF or something similar for this swap, that would be much appreciated.
