12JE clunking and leaking oil
« on: May 31, 2023, 06:55:46 PM »
Hey guys!

I've been working on this '76 Spectra 18' I picked up with the goal of getting it in the water this summer.

I finally got the motor running but noticed a clunking sound from the driveline. I also found a reasonable amount of oil in the water that ran through it. It smells distinctly like the hypoid gear oil I just filled the bowl with.

I did some research and found a few posts that said this kind of noise is normal when idling on the trailer. Based on that, I'm not super worried about the sound, but I really don't want to be the a-hole who leaks a bunch of gear oil into the lake.

I didn't find much info about what could cause the oil leak, but a few posts said it might be the bowl seal. Do you guys think the bowl seal might be causing both the leak and the noise? If so, can anyone point me in the right direction about how to fix it? Or if not, any other ideas about what I should look into?

I literally have zero knowledge about jet pumps, so if you could explain any advice like I'm 5 it would be greatly appreciated :D

Here's a video of the sound in case its helpful: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/GRfpAmnAUJA

Thanks in advance for any help, and hopefully see y'all on the water this summer!
