before i break it
« on: July 29, 2011, 01:13:10 PM »
new to the forum, new to the jet boats
i am taking my dads boat from him, i went to UTI in sacramento and while i was gone he left the jet boat out for years in open weather
currently in tacoma washington, its a challenger with a olds bored to 471 apparently. i got the motor back up and running after some maint. but before i let it warm up with the pump hooked up to it, i want to know about pump maint.

i read its not a good idea to leave it attached when running the motor off a hose, i am not sure who made the pump, ill attach pictures
but the motor and pump were built/rebuilt four years ago and have 16hrs together, when do pumps need a rebuild, how often should i grease the zerk fitting and change the gear oil if it takes some, i used search on the forum but to no avail on a clear answer.

any quick tips to get me on the water would be great

thanks
christian

Before you run the pump, in the water (preferably) or on the hose here's what I'd do:

1. Grease the shaft bearing, that's the zerk fitting right near the ID tag, like any other seal just pump grease in until you feel slight resistance, you don't want to blow it out.
2. On the bowl there are to plugs, 10 & 2 oclock, remove both of the plugs, add 90wt gear oil to one of the holes until you see clean, clear gear oil come out of the other one.

Looks like a Berkeley pump to me, good looking set up.
