Can I turn a shaft that has some grooves in it? What would would the min diameter be? I don't think I need to turn it much, but it is definately worn where the seals and bearings go.
My impellor has deep grooves where the wear ring is, it looks like I would need to replace that, correct? Or is this all normal stuff I shouldn't worry about?

Some impellors have grooves cut into them at the wear ring so the water can hold the impellor in place better , or so I was told . How deep are they . I'd at least post some pics or send the shaft to someone for machining to be safe . Some people bolt down the packing glands too tight and that will cause a groove to form on your shaft ..... :sly: I think I'll stop there . :screwy:

I can't remember what those impeller grooves are called, but from what I was told by Jim Coffee at Performance Jet, and I know I'm not gonna word this correctly and get flamed for it, but they somehow allow the water to form a "wall" so to speak, creating more resistance to keep water from recirculating around the impeller.
In regards to the grooves in the shaft, where on the shaft are they? If they're where the packing rope seal goes, like beerjet said someone overtightened the packing gland nuts to cause that. I'd just replace the shaft IMHO.

Of course now I'm wondering if I should have added an inducer. Do I need one? I went from a Berkeley A to an A/T A - those are the ones that are more aggressive alone, correct?

personally, i dont think you ever NEED an inducer.....it just helps in various scenarios

The AT A should be real close to the Berkeley A (as far as RPM go), its the Aggressors that act about a cut more agressive, and also now the AT hi helix are much more agressive.

we dont need no stinking inducer, just kidding call your pump guy and ask his opinion
