Title: Berkeley 12JA-A-H Pump
Post by: 21dusty on February 25, 2017, 07:36:39 AM
Hello All

I have the above pump on my 69 Sidewinder, I want to go thru it before I put the boat in the water.

What are the good and bad things I need to look for and repair or adjust???

I am planing on doing the bearings and seals for sure, I need to know what else needs attention while I am into it.

I noticed that the inlet has little Skags on each side of the intake, I am assuming that they are there to straighten out the water flow,
before it gets into the pump, any suggestions as to do with them if anything???

Also what kinds of upgrade items will work with this pump????

Thanks in Advance for any assistance.

Take Care

Dusty

Hello All

Everything, look for cracks, heavy corrosion, dried up epoxy, sealant condition....

In all honesty, you may be better iff just doing a full rebuild, basically stated, bearing, impeller/wear ring, gaskets, shaft seal, grease seals, bowl bushings, measure the shaft wear areas etc.  Many times if you try to simply "freshen it up" by doing just the basics, you'll find the impeller clearance is wide and performance will be poor. You end up pull it apart twice. How much power do you plan? What are you going to use the boat for? If you have some quality measuring tools, you can check these clearances before hand, it really depends on your budget and how badly things are torn up. That a fairly old pump, pay close attention to threaded holes and look for excessive corrosion.

The good news is, once you've gone through it, you are good for many years if boating.

Not really, they are actually there to keep the rear of the boat planted while turning. They do help somewhat from keeping the pump from pulling air, but more for handling.

Also what kinds of upgrade items will work with this pump????

Thanks in Advance for any assistance.

Upgrades are unlimited.

Really depends on use intentions and power. Get the basic pump together and upgrades can be done down the road. Most of the upgrades are bolt on.

I highly recommend a Place Diverter and a quality loader grate on every jet.

Good luck, have fun and ask lots of questions.

Hello All

Here is some more information about the boat and pump, and engine and its intended use.

The boat does not have an engine in it right now, it had a 454 in it before I bought it.

The tong weight is pretty heavy at the present time since there is no Engine in it now.

I will be putting a Pontiac OHC 6 into it, they were built from 66-69 for Pontiac Tempest and Firebirds.

This engine now is upgraded to a 301 Cu. In., 14.5 Comp Ratio. Hillborn Fuel Injection, Dry Sump Engine, approx. 450-500 H.P.

It has been 169 MPH on the Salt Flats in 32 Roadster belonging to JD Tone.

It was first used on the water by Bud Meyer of Eddie Meyer Racing of North Hollywood, he put it into a HYDRO, showed up at Salton Sea for race season and was protested because of the Over Head Cam, the rule book said no over head "CAMS", Bud said that he only had "One Cam", Singular, on that technicality they had to let him race it.

He raced against a 100% field of V8 Hydro's, they could not catch him in the turns. He WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP THAT YEAR with the OHC 6.

So I think that it is very fitting that it gets back into a BOAT, NOT TO RAISE HAVOC, but for the uniqueness and fun of it being back in a boat.

It weights approx 200 pounds less that a Pontiac V8, not sure about other engines.

I think that it will be a fun project and I plan on having a lot of pleasure enjoying the UNIQUENESS OF IT.

Anyhow, just some update info on my boat and motor project.

Take Care, All

What RPM is this deal going to turn?

That will make a gigantic difference in the direction of the pump build.

That thing sounds cool as hell.....

Hello All

RPM's should be in the 5500-6000 Range.

Harmonics get really fierce at the higher RPM's with that long crankshaft.

I am working on retrofitting a couple of Diesel Engine Viscous Crankshaft Harmonic Dampers to hopefully severely reduce the harmonic vibrations, if they work good then I might try in taking the engine to 7000 RPM's.

Here is some more information on the engine.

Engine Specifications:

1968 Pontiac OHC 6
Approx: 450-500 H.P.
301 Cubic Inches
Cunningham 5.7" Steel Billet Rods, 7/16" Rod Bolts
14.5:1 Compression Ratio
Chevy 292 Crankshaft
8620 Steel Billet Camshaft
Rollerized Cam Followers
Algon Fuel Injection Manifold
Hillborn Injectors, Pump, and Lines
Electromotive DIS Ignition
Barns Lube/Scavenge Pump

I think it should be allot of fun when I get it done and in the water.

If someone could tell me where I can find instructions to post picture on the sight, I might try and post some pictures.

Take Care,

Dusty

Hit the three dots at the top off the page and select the option you desire.

So your going to have to go with a smaller trim impeller, I honestly would recommend going with a mag bronze or a stainless impeller, you're on the ragged edge for horsepower, but the rpm it's a deal killer for an aluminum.

Love to see some pictures.

Hello All

Here are some pictures of the Pontiac OHC 6 Engine for my 69 Sidewinder.

A friend of mine gave it the nick name "Boat Motor Form Hell" or the B.M.F.H. for short.
