Title: Berkeley 12JE Thrust bearing noise?
Post by: Marius on April 26, 2019, 04:09:29 AM
Hello

I am in process installing my new engine.. so i figured i would replace the packing rings, when i removed them the pump turns very easy, and i noticed some noise from the bearing when i turned it..
I can not remember any sound from the pump when i was using it in 2017.. and i feel no slack up and down or in and out when i had my hand down the inspection hole.

Is this sound normal, or is it time for replacing ?  :-\

Pull it and replace thrust bearing and seals . That bearing is toast . And it spins way too easy .

Rebuild The Pump; I just finished a new motor and there was no play up/down. If the thrust bearing is bad you will Destroy the Motor. I was thinking "Do You Feel Lucky." NO, So I contacted  Toni Skagen and took the pump up. He called a couple of days ago, I am very thankful I didn't take a chance. The wear ring was badly worn. The impeller was shot and the intake loader would have broken. Cheap Insurance gives me the time to redo the interior while waiting another week or so.

oh my..
Thanks guys, rebuild there is, i am never lucky in anything with mechanical things  :)

I hope i can be able to pull the shaft without taking the pump out of the boat, would make things a lot easier...

U should be able that u have the motor out , just take ur time and hit the impeller nut will spray oil and gun it off . U might need a puller for the impeller and then take the end cap off and gently tap the shaft forward .

Thanks.

It came apart pretty easy.
While ordering parts, i was looking at loaders...

I might have made a new thread about the next question, but since i already have this, i will just ask here.

This boat has an 12JE pump with an aluminum A impeller, with a place diverter.
As stock the 460 has 320 hp and i only got 4400 rpm max.

I now have a newbuilt 460, made a little mods to it and it made 485 hp at 5150 rpm in the dyno.

Plan was just to drop it in and see how it will work with the stock A impeller.. ::)

But as i mentioned above, i looked at loaders, it's easy to access backside of the screws when it's without motor..
If i replaced the stock loader with this one.. would it be a great idea, or should i just leave it...  ::)

What mods did you put in the new built 460?

Rock grate?

Short answer, YES!

Upgrade the loader bolts to 5/16-18.  Drill and tap all the way through suction.  Install at least two lock nuts on the rearmost loader bolts, if the bellhousing and/or oil pan interfere with installing lock nuts on the front two.

Short answer, YES!

It might be just a rock grate, see the picture of the one that sits there.
Pic turned on the side, but i guess you can see it anyway  :D

7 cc dish hypeurectic pistons
Stock C8VE (D3VE) heads ported by a professional, resurfaced 0,040" for a little more compression, also resurfaced intake flange to match intake.
Camshaft and lifters from High flow dynamics, Paul Kane. Dual valve springs from trick flow.
3/8" pushrods, 7/16" studs and scorpion roller rockers.
Edelbrock performer rpm intake
Quick fuel 850M marine carburetor, and a big enough mechanical fuel pump.
Accel distributor with a Pertronix ignitor kit.

Think that was just about it :)

That's an early loader.  They work surprisingly well.  I'm not sure if you would see much difference changing it.  Definitely worlds better than a rock grate.

Aha, thanks!
I thought this was stock on the JE12.

Maybe i should just leave it then, and test how my new motor works with my A impeller... then give it a thought of replacing if i want to tweak some later on, with a new impeller and maybe an inducer.
Looking at the charts, my A impeller might be a little to "small" for my hp, curious to see how it works  :D

Should i replace the bolts to larger ones on this loader also, or is it so small i can leave it with the stock ones?
