Title: Berkeley E steering cable
Post by: 76Challenger on February 11, 2017, 05:44:03 PM
Need some help figuring out what steering cable I need. Mine is freezing up and very tough to turn. It's an 18.5 foot boat with all original rack and jet from 1977.

Are the connections the same on both ends for all cables? Just get the same length?

The tail ends are typically the same. To find a cable with the proper rack end you're going to be limited, many of the manufacturers have discontinued the older designs.

You will likely want to buy a kit with the helm and all.

Pretty inexpensive in the grand scheme.

Ok thanks. Yea just trying my best to bring and keep this boat as original as I can as it was when my dad bought it new. I have a newer set up in the other Challenger I have I actually like it better so if I have to change it at least it won't be a total heartbreak lol.

Original is great until it's not repairable.

At that point, you simply need to upgrade. Safer, works better and totally serviceable.

Once installed, very hard to distinguish it from OEM. Not like it was made by the boat builder, it was just what they could get at the time.

Don't get me wrong, I totally know what you mean. You want it to be like a time machine, always the same way you remembered it. I would never scrimp on controls.
