Berkeley ig pump

What do y’all think is the problem? If I stomp on it from a stop it feels like pump slips, almost like a clutch slipping in a car????? Sometimes when idling it makes a rattling noise.

Take it this is a new issue?  Could elaborate on the boat, engine, maintenance, etc?  Do you regularly drive it on/off the beach?  Have you ingested any debris, including rocks?  How often do you grease the thrust bearing and fill the bowl with oil?

My guess it hasn't been maintained and the bearings are dying and maybe taking the impeller with them.

I just got it as a hull in September (mantra tunnel), just got a motor in it (496 bbc), wiring, etc. well you probably know what I’m talking about. I’ve only had it out twice. I did hit the grease fitting about 4 pumps and topped

If I’m moving and hit it,seems to do fine. Also noticed at idle there is no pressure showing on my gauge the goes up to about 20 or 30 when I accelerate

Gauge on the pump?  Suction, intake, or bowl?

My guess is that the pump has been neglected and is tired now.

It should be easy enough to pull your bowl for inspection.

I would recommend, on an oil lube bowl (Berkeley or Legend), stick with 90W gear oil unless a repair sleeve has been installed.  Grease, in an oil lubricating bowl, will warm up and run to the bottom of the oil reservoir, causing the bushings to run dry.  Grease works fine in a grease lubricating bowl (Dominator or Aggressor), because there is nowhere for the grease to go.

I'm assuming your 496 is pretty stout.  What impeller do you have? 

Do you have a loader?  Inducer?

Next thing I would look at is air leaks in the suction.  It is possible to pull air through the packings and around the hand hole cover.

I would also look at how the intake is set as well as the finishing work to seamlessly blend the aluminum intake with the hull.

Seems like you have already put a lot of love into your boat.  Check everything so that it is the best that it can be, then it will run its best.

I had the same problem identical to what you are describing tried shaft/bowl bearings went out and with new motor. I would run through the pump for sure

Dang sgriffin!  So today I checked the bowl grease,(90wt) and it seems low or empty. Only been out twice on 30 or 45 min runs. I filled it back up and it didnt take very much. How much does it take to fill when empty. Sorry for all the questions.

Please check your engine oil for metal particulates.  Wouldn't be a bad idea to to cut open your oil filter for inspection.

When the shaft twists like that, everything lines up to push on your engine thrust bearing.  I would hate to see damage to your engine that could be preventable.

It doesn't take much, maybe half quart when empty.  However it really seems like a lot when you pull the bowl and it spills.  Honestly, I never paid attention to how much I used, I just fill it until all the air (or milkshake water) bleeds out of the 2nd pipe plug.

Will do. Reckon a bowl inspection is in order. Thanks for the info. This is my first jet boat as you can tell, lot of things to learn.

Yeah I diffently took the time to run through the hole check list cut filter every time. Motor comes out every season and run my own check up
