Title: Berkeley JC shaft dimensions
Post by: CauseforDivorce on September 07, 2014, 12:41:09 PM
I'm having my shaft machined and sleeved. There's a lot of clearance in the bowl bushings.
Does anyone have the actual specs on the shaft?
Bushings are new.
Thanks, GARY

Install the shaft bushings and inside mic them, subtract .002" boom... The shaft dimension should be dead nuts anywhere the bushings didn't ride...

I think you are making this tougher than it is.  ;D

I can measure one if you want, but this is easy....

I normally have them spray welded and re machine them on a lathe. But I can have stuff welded pretty cheap (I built their chiller).

The shaft was already sleeved once with stainless and I'm just trying to save it for the rest of the season but don't want to wipe out my new impeller and wear ring. Is .002 clearance still ok for a greased bowl?

You said JC.... They use 90wt gear oil, grease does zero for a Babbitt bearing.

Just my 2ยข

I think I'm going to go back to the 90w  that's what I get for listening to somebody. I was trying to vote against it from the beginning.

I have never seen the grease thing work.

Check this out......

They can spray several different grades of steel, titanium, bronze, brass and aluminum... So figgen cool...  8)

Berkeley pumps use Babbitt bearings I figured they would use oil lite bronze bushings?

that's pretty amazing stuff I would think that's sprayed on metal has to be harder than shit.

Nope, Babbitt, high nickle and silver plated copper dealio... Not unlike a Michigan 77 shell.

I was just going to say sounds like a clevite 77 bearing .that's surprising but I guess it keeps the shaft from having to be that hardened.

My uncle used to do that on some fabrication of thermalwells back in the 80's. I remember it being called stellite. Shot from a special tool on a cutting torch. May have been a ceramic coating. I was young.

Is it better to use synthetic 85-140 or conventional 80-90?

I doubt it matters. I use Amsoil Extreme gear 75-90 but only because I have the stuff all over the place.  Hypoid 90 is fine. You could probably put just about any gear oil in there and it would a ton better than grease.

I have to fill mine every outing because the shaft seal leaks so I just buy the cheap gear oil at wall mart mine looks like the shaft has a little wear in it.

What would be the maximum clearance from shaft to bowl bushings?

The biggest one I ever checked was about .006" and it was worn the hell out. I would think  .004"would be the max.

IDK for sure though.

Good info thanks
My shaft had .033
That was supposed to be a good used shaft only had five and a half hours on this pump

.033"?

The impeller to wear ring is much less than that....

You certain?

Did you measure the bowl bearing out of the bowl? They are split and get smaller when pressed in.

Are you sure about that dimension?

Dial indicator on the shaft before disassembly. Tremendous amout of clearance in the impeller. In fact I pulled up on the shaft and turned it with no rubbing of the impeller. When I pulled it apart there was no signs of the the impeller actually hitting.
Long story but I know how that happened...

Is there any type of glue or silicone that I need to use to install the new SS wearring?

How tight should it fit?
There was silicone on the old one. Kind of like the white John Deere form-a-gasket. Pretty tough stuff.

This pump is nice now!
New wear ring and insulator, New impeller, all new seals for the pump and diverter.
Mike at JD Machine fixed the shaft, PERFECT!
Mike Harkrider and Tom Petersons info was invaluable. All parts from CP Performance and Connelly Marine. And friends that I cant thank enough for the help.
Needed very little detail work on the impeller. Impeller is .031 off the sholder and .0125 clearance .025 total. No thrust deflection and .002 clearance in the bowl bushings. Now it just needs to be painted and installed.
